I had a work unit fail (after 8½ days of processing time) which someone else has since finished successfully. (So zero credits to me.) What sort of thing may cause such a failure? Is it worth me risking processing other workunits of this type / from SETI@Home?

Workunit: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=417840361

My result: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1170821952

This is on a PC that is not overclocked, with Windows ME, BOINC Manager v5.4.11 (the most recent that actually still works on this PC).

Thank you for the link.

I do have the latest drivers for my (oldish) NVidia card and the most recent DirectX. DXDiag is happy with my video drivers.

"But the only sure workaround in case the project does have graphics is not to look at the graphics or to use the screen saver."

:(

Oh, well.

Thank you for the reply.

As pretty as the screensaver is it can cause problems. and without it you'll get a minor boost to your rac

Ever since the classic days, I have always disabled the screen saver. On a Celeron 633 (or 600..I can't remember now, it was the 300-something pin socket), a classic WU would take 160 hours with the screen saver enabled. With it disabled, the WU would take around 14 hours. Ever since then, I've had the screen saver turned off, and now with opti apps, you don't get an option for the screen saver, so it all works out.
