This is really spooky :O http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,505159,00.html Interestingly, as in many modern things, the "reality" of what is technologically possible today is much more frightening than the older & less-sophisticated "vision" when it was just "Sci-FI". Humanity continues to show an unswerving determination to escalate it's own demise. I'm finding myself becoming a greater believer in the scientific hypothesis that the more intelligent the species...the shorter-lived. Would indeed explain why the sky appears to lack all the background chatter & traffic of millions/billions of Kardashev Type I & II civilizations ; > ) Lol! Resistance is Futile....... |

...Engineering Division, said what will make cybots so useful is that they will be able to form groups, function autonomously and respond almost immediately. |

[i]...Engineering Division, said what will make cybots so useful is that they will be able to form groups, function autonomously and respond almost immediately. So, will they have their own Forum here, are should we share ours with them? |

Next thing You know they'll do is make themselves better, and demand to be our equals. Savoir-Faire is everywhere! The T1 Trust, T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, America's First HST |

[i]...Engineering Division, said what will make cybots so useful is that they will be able to form groups, function autonomously and respond almost immediately. Why "yes" it was... Hence the name of the thread ;>)
This is the exact same phrase that freaked me out. Ya see....add some sophisticated AI with a penchant for learning, a large collective to constantly update "hive" knowledge/experience and the ability to "form groups etc." as above....... I don't worry bout' mini-black holes as much as a piece of software that sees the world-wide computer grid & operation as horribly inefficient, assigns "blame" & commences to optimize it while preventing further external manipulation from being a threat. |

In nature, bacteria and viruses are the most adaptive kinds of complex entities. They exploit evolution w/ a hyper-drive. So effective in fact, there are many illnesses/diseases we can't cure since we can't manage their mutative ability to overcome our defenses. Bacteria can generate millions of generations in weeks, months, years...... A virus can just slightly mutate a certain protein sequence in it's outer shell that renders previous years of research & an approved treatment abruptly ineffective. Experts even have trouble, & in some cases can't crack certain programmed computer viruses. So, imagine a computer w/ above abilities that can evolve even quicker than bacteria and create it's own task-specific, adaptable viruses fully interactive w/ the hive mind and reactive to the external environment. I'm not even sure we can fully comprehend this kind of power. |

I'll bet 'Skynet' can, which makes it even spookier. |

"HAL"; 1 letter each away from "IBM"; the article also reminds me of "Colossus: The Forbin Project" |

"HAL"; 1 letter each away from "IBM"; the article also reminds me of "Colossus: The Forbin Project" 2001 still mesmerizes me every time I watch it. It's quite interesting to see movie "tech" that we actually surpassed by the real 2001, and the tech that we won't likely accomplish before the 21st century. It's sad to think we'd be so much further along today if Apollo (moon program in general) hadn't been a single goal, but a "milestone" goal that was 1 step in a larger broader initiative that would have continued w/ a colony, Mars exploration, Mars + colony....Jupiter manned mission etc. 40 years of continuing progress at the pace of the Moon initiative, might have actually come pretty close to A.C.C. & Stanley Kubrick's vision. Perhaps my 3 Y.O. will live to see the vision realized in his lifetime........ |

"HAL"; 1 letter each away from "IBM"; the article also reminds me of "Colossus: The Forbin Project" One of my old P4 PCs, was called 'Colossus'.....this one is called 'Proteus'! I also had one called HAL (and a SAL), however, none of them ever exhibited any inclination towards Megalomania, thanks to their Microsoft OSs. With many authorities in the UK, obsessed with CCTV and this new potential, it is getting a little worrying though. There again, as long as MS do the OS for these 'bots, we'll be fine. lol Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

"HAL"; 1 letter each away from "IBM"; the article also reminds me of "Colossus: The Forbin Project" Uh, it is the 21st century; you must mean the 22nd. Don't know if this is true, but I heard somewhere that if the "Dark Ages" hadn't happened, we might be well beyond Mars colonization by now, technologically-speaking. |
