Usual outage day today (database backup/maintenance, etc.). Actually it would have been "usual" except that certain finagling by us in the background may have messed the replica up. That remains to be seen - if it needs intervention the fix would be trivial. Oh look. Somebody updated web code. Pretty colors. I think I overheard Dave talking to Rom about new forum features. I have no idea what they are. Helped Jeff walk through NTPCkr code this morning, tracking down bugs, etc. In essence the goal of this program is simple - to find groups of signals in our data that fall within a certain window of frequency/space but have been seen over multiple observations, and preferably near stars/planets. But it's actually quite complicated - there's a lot of set analysis/manipulation requiring chunks of dense code where bugs can hide if you're not careful. Plus there are always new "special cases" we find (or dream up before we find them) that we need to consider. In any case, we're pressing to get this thing rolling and producing non-zero results before the 10 year anniversary of the SETI@home launch in May. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. Matt, I have been a number-cruncher for SETI since 1998. I enjoy the updates and insight that you share into the inner workings of the SETI project. Norm Hill |

Oh look. Somebody updated web code. Pretty colors. I think I overheard Dave talking to Rom about new forum features. I have no idea what they are. I have no idea why they aren't user selectable. ;) Whoops yeah I do. Anyway you finally got your first official renewal notice. I told you it was coming. :P me@rescam.org |

Matt, I started crunching in 98 as well but had a gap early 2000's and forgot my account details. I started a new account in 2003 & haven't looked back since :-) Maybe Norm Hill had a similar experience. BTW, thanks, Matt, for all your updates. I always read them but usually keep my mouth shut. |

I started crunching in 98 as well Seti Classic didn't start until May 1999. (source) In May 1999, after several months of testing, we launched the project. |

geez, so much noise for giving Matt a complement. Guess I'll do what another poster did and shut my mouth. The noise isn't it. (And for the record, I wasn't trying to misrepresent my stats, I really thought it was 1998 but whatever. |

(And for the record, I wasn't trying to misrepresent my stats, I really thought it was 1998 but whatever. I got it wrong too, it must have been '99, silly me :) I remember frantically plugging my aging notebook into a wall socket in a hotel in Italy in August, desperate to finish a classic unit in about the time it takes this PC to do 4 AP V5. I was sure that was 98 but thinking about it, it was 99. It was very hot, mid 30's celcius in the day & the stupid hotel didn't turn the ac on until evening. Happy days! I had the weirdest bathroom in that hotel suite.......but that's another story. |
