Just downloaded version 6.4.6 and when I try the run the program I receive this message. "Error reading setup initialization file" and stops me from going any further. I have uninstalled version 6.4.5 and also download the windows cleanup utility. Unless I am doing something in the wrong order. Anyone have any ideas, I'll check back in the morning. Thank you.

You most likely have a download that got trashed. Windows makes it particularly difficult to clean these up as it will "download" from the cached version forever more, and the cached version is hidden. Find the cached version, kill it, and re-download.

I am having the same "Error reading setup initialization file" message. I have cleared temporary files and redownloaded four times and still getting the same message.

I also have the same problem. I've tried this 5 times now. I've tried deleting the file and redownloading it, I've tried letting windows overwrite the download, I've wiped my internet temporary files, I've tried uninstalling BOINC first, and I've tried installing over the current installation. I always shut BOINC down beforehand. No matter what I try I get the same problem - error reading setup initialization file. Any suggestions as to what to try now? Am running Windows XP SP3.

All right, last night during the upload something went wrong with the upload of 6.4.6 which may have caused it not to propagate to all download mirrors yet. So the one from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php may be broken.

However, the one on the actual download site can be reached and is OK. I just tested it.

So if you have a problem with the download, get 6.4.6 from here:
BOINC 6.4.6 Windows 32bit
BOINC 6.4.6 Windows 64bit

It is probably wise to delete your temporary internet files before downloading the new one, just in case.

WOOT Thank you VERY MUCH, was beginning to get VERY frustrated. This one worked perfectly, installed over existing install with no problem at all.

I am still getting this error message constantly I have deleted all temp internet files and temp files.

I have had boinc in the past but I uninstalled it, now I can not install it at all, I double click the .exe and it comes up with the same message as the OP.

Any help?

p.s. I have tried the download on this thread plus the one from the main boinc download page and no luck.

win xp home, sp3, etc etc.

If you press the SHIFT button when clicking on a download link, it will start over from scratch without trying to resume from a cached version.

Thanks for the tip, I tried that but it still gave me the same error message.

I have an old BOINC folder which I presumed had only bits of user data and saved progress etc, should I delete all of this folder too?

Its not necessary to delete the old BOINC folder as that is not coming into play at this point. The larger problem is that you need to download the installer first, correct?

Well, I have the installer but everytime I try to run it it gives me the same error message very soon after double clicking it.

I have downloaded it, deleted it, deleted temp internet files, downloaded again, deleted again, tried with shift and always the same error message.

Quick update on this error.

I have a laptop in my office and I tried to download boinc and install and it worked perfectly fine.

It must be clashing with some software I have installed on my desktop, I have no idea what kind of software would cause an installer to fail so quickly.

Anyone got any ideas as to what kind of programs could be the most likely culprit?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Installer.

Either re-register or reinstall the Windows Installer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346

Thanks for that I will try it.

I successfully downloaded and installed boinc on this laptop yesterday, I emailed the .exe in a .rar to myself and tried that .exe on my desktop.

for some strange crazy reason it worked...

So its installed and running fine but I'm at a loss as to why it wasnt working before..

That would suggest that the download on your home PC was corrupted somehow during transmission. How it got corrupted? Hard to say. Do you have any spyware/malware on your home PC that is changing MD5 hashes or modifying the code upon download completion? Other than that, I'm at a loss as well.
