Not to be disparaging of F1 racing, but in no way can they be considered as cars
NASCAR is much closer to being considered as "cars". Just an opinion.

Cars that only turn left? How real is that?

KERS is basically hybrid technology, which is very real for street cars today. Plastic bodies, carbon brakes, electronic valves, underbody aerodynamics, are all features from Formula 1 that are driving around the streets today. Unless you insist on buying Detroit Dinosaurs, of course.

If you want real cars, go down to your local dirt oval and watch the real stock cars. Now that is fun.

Just another opinion ;).

I have to disagree with you on that kaseychief. I drive a Ferrari and it is a much closer cousin of the F1 car than a Ford Mustang is of the Nascar version. To be fair, my car is an older Ferrari but my motor is essentially the same as the Ferrari F1 motor of the time (much detuned) . My suspension is the same that the F1 car used at the time, as are the brakes, injection system, ecu. If you have the money you can buy a Ferrari FXX which is an F1 car with two seats and a full body. It used the same engine, trans, brakes, suspension, etc of the 2007 F1 race car. It was built as an experiment to see if the general public could handle the power. Even though Ferrari only sold it to qualified buyers, people who passed driving test and took classes on how to drive it, several used ones are on the market from time to time. Can you buy a street legal Nascar?

Both Nascar and F1 are test beds of technology. I believe that F1 is the pinnacle of motor sports and a lot of today’s tech comes directly from F1. The McPherson suspension found in most street and race cars today came from Fiat/Ferrari F1 race cars. Rack and Pinion steering came from Jaguar’s F1 team in the early 70’s. Honda’s continuously variable transmission was developed for their F1 efforts. Paddle shifting came directly from F1. I have not done extensive research but I think it would be fair to say that a lot more technology has been developed in F1 than in Nascar. But that is just my opinion.

Agreed Carlos.

Companies like Mercedes or BMW wouldn´t pay that much money if they couldn´t use the technology otherwise.

For example the tiptronic and Mufu steering wheels.

Any comparison of a NASCAR Cup car to a street car is no different than comparing a street car to any other race car, they are miles apart. The closest race car I have seen to a street car these days are the World Rally cars.

Yeah, the NASCAR cars have fenders and sort of look like a street car, but what is under the skin is completely a race vehicle.

And in other news...

Lauda wants to be a space pilot

MANAMA (Reuters) – Triple Formula One world champion Niki Lauda has paid $200,000 (136,000 pounds) for the chance to fly a Virgin Galactic spaceship, entrepreneur Richard Branson said Saturday.

Branson, whose Virgin Group sponsors the Brawn GP team, held a news conference at the Bahrain Grand Prix to publicise his space venture.

He said Brawn's Brazilian driver Rubens Barrichello had also bought a passenger "ticket to space" for the same amount as Austrian Lauda.

"We are not doing upgrades in the space project, we need people who are willing to help fund what is quite an expensive program and these two have been generous enough to pay their way," said Branson. "They can afford it."

The 60-year-old Lauda is a qualified airline pilot who retired from racing in 1985 to concentrate on his own aviation business. His current budget airline Niki competes against his former company Lauda Air.

"I fly Boeing and Airbuses and my only dream...was to fly the space shuttle," said Lauda, hobbling around the paddock on crutches after a recent operation. "I was always looking at that, but that was impossible.

"When Richard came along with this project I was the first knocking on the door."

The U.S.-based Virgin Galactic is one of several contenders in the new commercial space race. The company plans to launch spaceships from carrier planes, taking two pilots and six passengers on a brief sub-orbital journey.

Branson said Virgin were planning to build a "spaceport" in the Middle East as well as in the United States.

"We are in discussions with Bahrain, with Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Saudi Arabia and over the next two months we will settle on one of those five countries," he said.

"The idea is that Virgin Galactic will have three spaceports, one in America in New Mexico, one in the Middle Eastern region and one in Australasia."

Branson said the first spaceship would be completed by the end of the year before undergoing 18 months of testing. He and his family will embark on the first flight.

"Niki, when he is finished, will be capable of flying both (mothership and spaceship), " he added.

But Valentino won. Pedrosa is second and Stoner third. Lorenzo fell a few laps before end, when he was chasing Stoner,

It's looking like KERS has some more development work ahead of it. As I have seen it's use, it pretty much only allows slowers cars to keep from getting passed. I have not seen in used to pass.

Following the announcement last week from the FIA in which the sport's governing body cemented an optional 40 million (US$ 60m) budget cap for the 2010 season, the Formula One Teams' Association met today at Heathrow to discuss the issue. Many FOTA members are against the rule in fear of a 'two-tier' series.

Just out of the workshop of Le Mans, the brand new Pescarolo-Judd surprised everyone for its first race in Barcelona.

After leading almost the entire race, Jean-Christophe Boullion and Christophe Tinseau missed the victory due to a late race safety car.

Qualifying for Catalunya is still 4 hours away, but it's looking like BMW has made some significant improvements. Cann't wait to watch the qualifing.

Jenson Button on Pole position.
Vettel second Barricello and Massa.

It will be an interesting start tomorrow.
Massa is the only car with KERS on the first places.
