I would like to defend the SETI staff.
To be perfectly honest, what really do you expect them to do? As it is a non-profit organisation relying on donations, money for huge upgrades to infrastruction is just not possible currently.
I know that it has been going for a very long time, I even crunched SETI@home Classic - but the project seems to have gone beyond what the current hardware can support and the admins are almost powerless to do anything about it.

ME I expect honest communication!!!! What is so hard about posting on the mian web iste or even the tech boatd that hey we have problems . we will work on it but not till then or it wont be fixed then.Seems to me that they, the seti staff are sucking up to the big time crunchers. well we just have to get the Maxy opt app out our they will leave us. FIne , From now on let them only update Opt apps. We have not herad one word from the lab . Even a hey were busy but we working on it would be a big improvement.

Defend away, I'm not kocking them. But the service is poor, and the care is poor. I.E release on a friday, that is by anyone's count plain stupid. If people go round saying poor seti staff all the time then this is what I expect to see.

Ban me I no longer care!

Hardware ... I think not! They saw this coming on Feb 3rd or way before this. See post:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=51822&nowrap=true#861894

"... servers are slowly getting more and more out of sync, given some are 32-bit, some are 64-bit, some are running this rev of the OS, some are running that rev, some have this package installed, some don't, etc. and this is apparently becoming a problem. Like we have time to clean this all up".

These problems usually are to many hands ...learning while working the code. When there is a problem "Like we have time to clean this all up" is the answer. Don't volunteer to do IT work it you can not take time to do the work.

Its so simple:
They want something from us, our CPU (GPU) Power, our Computing resources and all what i expect in return is a infrastructure of that project that works RELIABLE.

They have given you fair warning that they will NOT always have work.

Ahhh, well, just wait untill tomorrow, just crunch for another project, which is advised, anyway & how, otherwise you can do some maintenance on your own farm and or host's, cleaning coolers, removing spiders and cocroaches from your P.S.U. and so on, if you get my drift . . .

Please, don' t shoot the ' messenger ' and it' s time for a beer, anyway. Half past 8, in this part of the globe.

Jou took the words right out of my mouth, RandyC :)

It never ceases to amaze me how worked up people get over the smallest things.
Yes, Seti ask you to donate your spare computing power. Should you choose to do more than that (ie build & run systems just for crunching) it's your choice. Should you decide the leave the project, again it's your choice.
They've never claimed there will be 24/7 availability of work, or of the system. So it's just a bit unrealistic for people to expect it.
If you run out of work, you run out of work. If you don't, you don't. Life goes on.

I wish they could fix the system so it would accept the ones that make it to 100% upload and not set the upload time to start over.
I currently have 6 units at 100% of the 9 work units trying to upload.
Timer is counting down to re-upload the those 6.
If I have more than half of mine are at 100% I wonder how many other users are out there that are in the same boat.....
If they could fix this problem it would go a long way fixing the traffic problem.

If it would happen just once in a while i would be ok with that.

I am really getting sick of babysitting seti on my fleet all the time.

But it happens now almost every freakin weekend, and then the regualr outtage tuedays every week on top of it.

my recommendation is to NOT join another boinc project, its more joining folding at home, since those guys dont have those problems, and on top of that, they really react fast anytime a issue occurs there.

But why cant we have some communication?

Staff of 3. Work has to be done, as well as sort out issues as they arise. Often they're busy doing the work & don't really have the time to let people know what is happening at that moment.
If you check out the Techical News threads you'll see that Matt does post on what has haapened during the day, when he gets a chance.

As for having a message on the main page saying there is a problem- many people don't even notice it's there & post endless threads asking the same question anyway. So why bother?
Might as well just sort the problem out.

Why do you have to baby sit your fleet?
I've been away for the last 4 & half weeks. Looking at my RAC over that period there have been dips & spikes as problems have occured, and then been resolved. Just as there will be after this has come & gone. It's taken no intervention on my part, BOINC downloads the work when it's available & returns the results when able.

Well that's strange I don't run out of work "every weekend" on my six crunchers, and 5 have a 1 day cache and 1 has a 2 day. Why do you have to "babysit" just wait a while and all will sort itself out.

A lot of people seem to be getting uptight for no reason, SETI@home uses you SPARE cpu cycles, and would be able to supply that sort of computing. If you decided to build a crunching farm, that is your business SETI@home didn't ask you to.

How you do it? ;-)

Since '21 Feb 2009 12:17:22 UTC' no new work.. and current ~ 700 results are waiting for the upload..

I'm happy that I had a nice WU cache [I think it was 4 days], if not I would be now without WUs..

EDIT:
My current GPU cruncher need ~ 370 WUs/day.. ;-D

Another problem to add to this pile:

One of the Astropulse validators is down.

Also, I normally crunch more work than what my profile shows at the time of this writing, but my laptop's motherboard failed because its Nvidia graphics chip which is soldered onto the motherboard failed, and I took a few weeks to get that sorted out. I only got the computer running today.

So ....If you post any care or concerns here... it appears, you considered are a "Moaner or Complainer".

I could care less about defending some lazy butt coding/server errors. I just want things to work right. I fix things like this for a living 24/7. If I were to have this many problems... I would not have a job! That is just my opinion though. FWTW
