Sudden DEATH off my SEAGATE 500GB,never, had seen, that a HDD, was gone before a year, though it was used 24/7. But hé, then it's stil, too fast. Then I have warranty, too.
On other rigs a have SAMSUNG SPINPOINT and Western
Digital, Hitachi, never had problems with those, but aso not Seagate.
What a bummer, ofcoarse the fastest host (XPx64,BOINC 6.5.4 X64 + MB-OPTI:AK_V8_SSSE3x + AP 5.0, SSE3 optized ({Don't Panic}r103).
Was comming home and found it hanging in BOOT: Please Change The BOOT DEVICE and press a key...:(
Try too install XP64, tomorrow though, will not get any work now. . .
Have a good evenin and night, though ;)

Before you do anything rash, check all the cables,
pull the connectors out, then put them back in.

Hi, thanks for your advice, but it's reallygone.
It produces 'strange sounds' and it it'sn't being detected by the B.I.O.S.
And that's usually a bad sign. Also as data-drive, it's data is partly destroyed!
Monday it'll get a other HDD, whithout problems, it's gone, within one year.
And it's not the puter, a X9650@3.7G,{OCZREAPER 533(4x)}XP64,4GiG DDR2 410MHz FSB=1640MHz.
I use it mostly for bigger programs, simulators, CAD/(CAM). VIDEO conversion and renderring and because it's fast compaired to my VISTA MultiMedia PC (Q6600,stock)

[edit] Sorry, a little after the event... [/edit]

... There are two states for HDDs:

Crashed;

Or about to crash.

Keep regular backups and expect a failure at some time.

SSD drives might be considered rather more reliable apart from the writes limit...

Also, HDDs really are cheap enough now that it is silly not to go for a RAID 1 (mirror). (Then again, knock over a PC or drop it and a RAID 1 is still no good when both HDDs are smashed... :-( ... Backup to a remote device is a good idea...)

Good luck,
Martin

(Mmmm... Now when did I do my last backup?!)

I am using an 8 GB flash cartridge in a USB port to make weekly backups of the BOINC directory and monthly backups of my home directory on a Linux box. It is also running the smartd daemon of the smartmoontools package created, among others, by dr.Bruce Allen of Einstein@home, which checks the health of my hard disks.

There are two types of people. The ones who do backups and the ones who will.

Hi, I'll back-up, all programs, but it's difficult to backup WU's.
They 'change' too quickly.
But I did manage to get (part)of my BOINC install, back and the WU's.
But can I safely put them in the new BOINC (6.4.5) setiathome.berkeley.edu folder, without them beïng trashed or denied, since I got a new load off WU's?

What would be wise?

You can do it before you do the new install, afterwards, it is a royal pain, and not pretty much guaranteed to not report correctly.

Seriously, dont worry about it.

Your Seti work is backed up in the Seti servers. If your PC crashes and burns, never to be heard from again, the work units you had will just time out and be re-assigned to a random new PC.

So dont worry about it, the Seti servers will take care of the lost units, just rebuild your PC and download some more work units and carry on.

The system is designed to cater for PCs or hard disks dieing at random.

Fred:

Before you do anything to your HDD, check out the news about Seagates 500GB, 1TB and 1,5TB discs dying due to a firmware error. Specific series of Seagate7200.11 disks have this error, and if you are affected its possible you could get free data-recovery done by Seagate.

Check this:

http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16276

Everyone else with these disks, should update their firmware to the last one supplied by Seagate, or chances are the disc will fail all of a sudden.

Check Seagates page about this error to see if you are affected:

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/news.jsp?DocId=207931

Luckily my only 7200.11 disc is among those not affected.

Hi, thanks, in one of my host's I have 2x Model: ST3500320AS, (Serial1: 9QM0X18K, Firmware: SD15)
Sometimes it won't BOOT, no real fault, just isn't visible?!?
Never seen this before, the B.I.O.S. 'answers' Press F1 to resume, then it BOOT's.
Only one really crashed, was a 320GB one.
And I had trouble with a DUAL-BOOT with LINUX and WIN XP, the bootloader errorred, error 17, no boot-menu shown. And is/was stuck.
This was a ST3500320AS.

I actually have 3x ST3500320AS. ALl are SD15 firmware versions. Brought almost together on the last days of the 5 years warranty regime

One died earlier a slow and painful death when it will work only about 5 mins each time before it is not detectable by BIOS until it cools down. Took 1 week to backup my photos on it. Not to mention trashed a 7 days WU cache (big sorry to wingmens)

The other two, well, had to wait until the RMA one came back (thankfully with SD1A firmware) and acted as backup while the other two take their turms getting flashed to SD1A.

Going by the reports of failures of all SD15, I did not take any chances on Seagate claimed list of affected drive serials and flash both SD15s to SD1As which thankfully work rather well until now.

I would recommend that any SD15 drive be backed up and flashed to SD1A using the seagate util.

I don't know for sure if this would work for recovering data or not, but I've had success swapping pcbs of two identicle hard drives to get one good one. i.e. one with mechanical issues and one with failed pcb. I can't say for sure the data would still be salvageable because it wasn't an issue. The user's data was on the server anyway.

I had 3 of those that failed in short order........bought them all at once from Tiger.

The first would not even load my OS.....thought that was my bad for some reason.
The second lasted about 2 days....now I knew something was foul.
The third worked for about a week......then I read the news.

Bought a couple of Seagate server drives after that........they have been humming along nicely since then. I always did trust Seagate.....you would think that their QC processes would have caught that bug....

Hi Mark, nice to see you back, yep a few of these SEAGATE had prob's with their firmware.
Managed to get the one crashed, working again, made a new partition and saved the WU's on it, as well.
No trouble since then. I use SEAGATE for 'ages', {but also HITATCHI & SAMSUNG (SPINPOINT)}.
