Is it possible to configure BOINC to not throw warning messages when it runs into things like no conncetion to the internet, etc? I have it set up on a laptop that all I want it to do is to run, not bothering the user who's computer I installed it on. If I can't, I'll have to remove it from her PC. Thanks!

The easiest way is to do a service install of BOINC. The unofficial BOINC wiki contains how-to guides.

Please note though, you do have to have the permission of the owner to run BOINC... (just making sure :) )

Just follow How to install BOINC 6 as a service?

It has screen shots and all.

Thanks for the replies, took a look at the intructions, one thing I didn't see explained is if I have to uninstall the current version, and re-install it? If so, what happens to all the work units waiting to be run?

You will have to uninstall and then reinstall. All work you have will still be available afterwards.

Ok, though one thing I noticed it said NOT to do, which I have been doing by default when I install the client, is to put the data dir as a sub of Programs files\BOINC. Not sure what the issue is with this, but he said it would cause it to go haywire. I haven't seen this in my experience with the 'normal' install of the program, at least not as far as I can tell, but it does say it's a no-no. Maybe it's related to the way the service install operates? Any idea as to why, and also if I do an unintall/reinstall in the default install dirs, it won't find my previous work. Thoughts?

The reason why the data dir should be separate from the program dir is that with BOINC 6, user accounts are created to "sandbox" the program so that it runs in a very limited privilege. As far as I can tell, this only applies to the protected mode (or service) install and when using the Vista OS with UAC enabled.

Any idea as to why, and also if I do an unintall/reinstall in the default install dirs, it won't find my previous work. Thoughts?

This shouldn't be. I do this often when upgrading a system and saving previous work, and so far it has always found my old work. The only thing I can think of is that you are not pointing to the proper directory where your data is installed.

Ok, I haven't tried it yet, but my only concern is that since the current install has data in the data subdir below BOINC, and the new one is going into docs & setting/user/etc etc, that it wouldn't have any idea that there is another data dir out there unless it searches for it, and if I point to it, won't it use that dir itself. BTW, I am running all of these (until I get my server farm working under Ubuntu that is) using XP Pro, and maybe 1/2-2/3 are running the latest version (6.4.6?) and the rest are running older versions.

Also, all of these are running under single user accounts, there aren't any multi user machines in the bunch, if this helps out at all.

If you're using BOINC v5 and are upgrading to BOINC v6, the installer will automatically separate the dirs into program and data for you.

If you're using BOINC v6 and are upgrading to a newer v6 app with the program and data dirs combined into one but want to separate them, just point the installer to the existing dir and the installer should separate them for you by moving them into the folder specified by the installer program options.
