There is a place in preferences where I can choose to process cuda - "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available" - I currently have it set to yes and have lots of cuda units but nothing else. My CPU runs about 95C when processing cuda so I'd like to give it a rest after awhile. If I say no, will it continue to process the cuda already downloaded. What I'd like to do is control the amount of cuda units I have at one time and not get new ones until all the ones I have are processed. I would like to continue to get AP units when available so I don't want to use the option to not get any new tasks. Anyway I can do this? |

Setting GPU processing to "no" will prevent you from downloading new CUDA units. You will still process the ones you already have. As a side note, 95c is dangerously high. I would suggest you look at your card's cooling system immediately. You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

if its relly 95c u need to invest in better cooling. |

It's been running 95c for a long time anytime I do anything intense. I was worried about it at first but doesn't seem to be a problem. I checked and there are a few others whose cards run that high. I notice a post last night where someone got their temps down by loading the new drivers and this morning after running cuda all night my temps were 89c. That's a 6c drop. I'm also going to try RivaTune and I've had the case open and a fan blowing directly into it ever since the summer when I got higher temps. Bottom line - while I'd rather not go through the hassle of replacing the card, this thing has an extended warranty until Aug 2011 -- so I'm not too worried about frying the card. |

Hi, If you installed the lastest drivers for your card NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (512MB), either the 181.20 or the 181.22 then, if you haven't already, you can install the NVIDIA System Tools software and you should then be able to control the fan speed on the card from the nvidia control panel. |

I loaded the 181.22 drivers last night, that seemed to knock the temp down by the 6C I mentioned to 89C. However I noticed that when cuda is running when I'm using the machine which it often does to finish a unit the temp reached 101c. It's probably been doing this since I got the machine back in Aug. I never monitored the temp intensely before cuda. I think this card must just run hot. The temp with out any load stays around 62c and nothing seems to get it lower. Its a GT9600. Manually increasing the fan speed took the 100% took temp down. I already had the NVIDIA System Tools software and the fan speed was set to 48%. I just created profiles to run the fan speed faster if the temp exceeds 70C and 80C. I'll see what happens. Thanks for advice. |

Do you have more than one card on that computer? I don't see any other pc's of yours with a CUDA card on it, so I was just curious, since Boinc seems to show that one as a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (512MB), and I assumed it was the pc we were talking about. However I noticed that when cuda is running when I'm using the machine which it often does to finish a unit the temp reached 101c If you card is like mine the max temp is 105C, which you are in my opinion getting too close to, so hopefully the fan speed adjustments help. Edit: grammer |

Oops sorry I missed keyed meant 9800 - it is in fact a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (512MB). Machine got to 101c this morning. I tried creating profiles for when temp got to high but that doesn't seem to be working. Fan speed is not increasing unless I do it manually. Also this afternoon I purposely put extra stress on card temp showed 105C. I'm sure its been like this since I got machine in August. Could sensor be wrong. I've never had a problem except when cuda first came out it would abort and cause screen to get pixilated. Haven't had that problem for a few weeks. I set up this profile, then went into profile polices to run it whenever temp was > 80. Sorry can't get a screen print of it. It doesn't seem to kick in even when temp reaches 90. Changing fan speed manually works. What program are you using to get the gpu temp? You mentioned RivaTune earlier, are you using that to control the fan speed or the nVidia prog? BTW who makes the card? Do they have a prog to get the gpu temps? I have an EVGA card in the pc I'm running CUDA and they have a prog named EVGA Precision to control the fan speed and temps, among other things. Other progs I've used to get gpu temps have shown slightly different temps than what the EVGA prog showed, but never more than a couple of degrees, so I'd say the temps you're seeing are fairly accurate. |

I'm using NVIDIA System Monitor to monitor the temp, been using that one for a few weeks now. Had another one called H monitor but took it off when trial expired. Temps between the two are consistent. I downloaded Rivatune last night but wasn't impressed so I took it off, back to using NVIDIA control panel. That's the one I have set up profiles the profile I pasted into my previous email. I can get it to load manually, But when I try to have it load automatically when temp is > 80 that doesn't seem to work even though the rule seems to have been created correctly in the profile polices. Once upon a time when I built computers I could tell you who manufactured the card but now I can't. Obviously NVIDIA manufactured the chipset. The machine is a gateway fX4710 and this might be important the card is factory overclocked. |

I might have to do that as a last resort. I'm still hoping to discover a way to make the fan kick in at 100% when temp reaches 80C. With the GPU fan at 100% and another small desk fan blowing into the open case I just got temp down to 86C from 101C. Guess I could leave it at 100% but the noise is kind of annoying. I'll just keep experimenting with it and only run cuda when I'm around to monitor the system. Thanks you been helpful |

Guess I could leave it at 100% but the noise is kind of annoying. I hear ya, I played with mine and got all kind of settings to work, but in the end becuase of the loud fan, (and not really being worried about the card getting up to 84C) I just let the default setting kick in and it's a much more quite experience. To be honest, I saw no ill effects being up at 84C or any better performace being down in the 70's or 60's, that made me want to put up with the noise any longer than I had to. |

if you want to keep your card for a good time... manually increase the fan speed to 60-80% if you are going to use veavy graphs or don't mind the little noise I do recommend 100% fan speed.. it would keep your system.. all of it from getting more heat than necessary... I noticed in several community boards that cuda is not managing the fans as it should.. so it is recomended to do it manually.. 60C it is ok.. 70.. ok.. more than that not.. over 100... it is red zone !! |
