. . . . Looking for something special? MOSIS Project Status Report

Enlèvements, une manipulation de plus? 25 septembre 2008

Message 870776 - Posted: 1 Mar 2009, 4:30:44 UTC - in response to Message 867608.

"Why do we park our cars on a DRIVEway, and drive our cars on a PARKway?"

George Carlin asked that question decades ago, and I still wonder...WHY do we?

The two were derived separately.

The driveway is the route to the garage, and you aren't really supposed to park in the driveway, you are supposed to park in the garage.

It is a parkway if it has a park (or used to have a park) down the middle. As opposed to a highway...

Thanks for the etymology, John. But it still is oxymoronic, don't ya think?

Which brings up another oddity of the English language...

I before E, except after C, or when sounded like A as in neighbor or weigh.
Isn't it a weird society we live in?

You betcha! What a language. We spell knife, knee and knock with a 'K'. Then you have the whole 'ough' thing. Say this words out loud;

cough
though
bough
through

No wonder we take some kind of English course for 12 yrs in public school, and then 4 more yrs of some other 'English' related course in college.

And who was the English comic that said "had to take the cat to the vet yesterday, he was sick as a dog.."?

Also, love a lot of the eastern Canadian expressions, like anything or anyone very fast is described as being "like Christ on skates". That always brings up an interesting mental image for me.
