Message 856127 - Posted: 21 Jan 2009, 20:00:52 UTC - in response to Message 855997.

It looks like they received short WU's with a few long ones sprinkled in. I don't think that its an anomaly. Just that the server is sending out short WU's recently

No.

I received 5 Astropulse tasks on a slow, single-core P4 that should never, ever, be allocated more than one AP task at a time - they take 2 days to run, and I have a 1 day, 50% resource share cache.
I am referring to the 2 individuals that have questions. I understand you got way to much work. from looking at the work they've done and what they appear to have they shouldnt have any problems

I have this report:
20/01/2009 12:15:51|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks
20/01/2009 12:15:51|SETI@home|Reporting 5 tasks
20/01/2009 12:16:01|SETI@home|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 607]
20/01/2009 12:16:01|SETI@home|Deferring communication for 11 sec
20/01/2009 12:16:01|SETI@home|Reason: requested by project

on host 688149 which resulted in 20 tasks downloaded.

But next pages also shows 21 tasks d/loaded @ 04:31, no msgs, s/ware update required re-boot between d/loads.

All times GMT (AKA UTC), [off-topic]Q? Why do we use UTC, by definition UTC time is only known after the event.[/off-topic]

edit] these d/loads totaled over 200hrs of work on quad with 1 day cache, shared with Einstein 75:25.

It looks like you have 20 short WU's and 1 AP. you are running a q6600 that should easily finish all 20 WU's in less than 1 day.

Not all MB WU's take the same time to crunch but you can tell when you have a short one by its return date. A 1 week return date indicates a short MB WU. A Longer WU would have a 3-4 week return date.

*sigh* I miss seeing the transfer throughput in the message window. I know cc_config debugging flags can make it show back up, but then there's 5 or 6 extra lines of connection info in the log, too.

[on topic] Wow, I love all of those APs you got for a whole 170 seconds worth of work. That's pretty impressive.

I wish I had a machine that could complete these in 2 Seconds.

Just received my 20. Only needed one to finish off the day. 6.2.18 on a Mac. Trouble must be on the server end.

Thankfully since the time it d/loaded ~12 AP tasks, which as I type, will still take another 30 hrs to complete. I have selected MB only, so it is not getting too stupid but I am convinced it must be affecting many more hosts.

Talk about more then asked for. After installing 6.6.2,.it restarted and kept downloading like it was stuck in a loop. It only stopped when I shut Boinc down and restarted it. I now have about 600wu waiting including about 60 AP's. All this on a 4 day cache. It kept doing a cuda request but not getting any cuda apps. I was set to not get any cuda either

Arrggh! I had it set to No New Tasks. I tried setting to allow new tasks and

1/22/2009 7:45:07 PM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
1/22/2009 7:45:07 PM|SETI@home|CPU work request: 0.00 seconds, 0 instances
1/22/2009 7:45:07 PM|SETI@home|CUDA work request: 354240.00 seconds, 1 instances
1/22/2009 7:45:07 PM|SETI@home|Reporting 6 completed tasks
1/22/2009 7:45:12 PM|SETI@home|Scheduler request completed: got 8 new tasks

It just keep repeating the same request for the same amount of cuda work.

In my experience Boinc 6.6.2 will continue to ask for work until you reach your daily download limit and still it will keep asking for more. I found it unusable and went back to Boinc 6.6.0.

Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....

Immediately after upgrading from 6.6.0 to 6.6.2:
.
.
downloaded a LOT of work

Good news is my GPU is running flat out, and my CPUs are busy too!

I agree...something is broken in BOINC 6.6.2

Just a guess, but I think it must be using the CUDA CPU times (most likely mere seconds) to determine how many WUs to download when it should be using the actual GPU time (approx. 5 - 10 minutes or longer).

I just got buried in AP WUs after installing 6.6.2
I counted the first 60, but was trying to abort downloads at the same time with more coming in...

I kept 14 APs (~7 days work) and suspended some of those waiting for processing time, that prevented further downloads.

I got 100s of CUDA WUs, but that's not an issue I think. What is odd is that 2 MB units are being processed at once (1 fast, 1 slow). I have 6 cores allocated to processing (75% of total), 5 are busy with APs, 1 is processing WB on CPU using 6.03, CUDA is processing using 6.08.

Unwanted download of new WUs is somehow the same as "Got *much* more work than asked for"

Hi,
its now the second time that the BOINC Manager started a download of 20 new WUs for SETI. But the status is on "Won't get new task". Is there an override I did not know ?

.. from Messages:
1/23/2009 9:24:45 AM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 1 completed tasks
1/23/2009 9:24:50 AM|SETI@home|Scheduler request completed: got 20 new tasks
1/23/2009 9:24:52 AM|SETI@home|Started download of 10dc08af.5443.12751.14.8.163
..

Using BOINC Manager 6.4.5 with optimized SETI code from "lunatics", application is setihome_enhanced 6.03, no CUDA.

This is just as I suspected. We let the machines band together and now they're smarter than us. Our only option is to swear fealty to our new machine overlords and hope we are spared from the coming apocalypse.

On a side note, I almost gave up on CUDA on my first try. I think it might have been growing pains, but it sure as heck slowed my system WAY down. Now, I think I can live with it, but I wasn't so sure before.

and so on for 19 tasks, including 3 AP tasks. I think all my hosts are over-cached now.
