Glasgow, Scotland 55 degrees 53' N 4 degrees 19' W. Had a colder Winter than the last few years with about 3 snow falls of an inch or so (don't laugh). It started snowing about 5pm this evening and has so on and off. We now have about 3 inches of snow. Current temp -0.4 degrees, humidity 93%, pressure 980.9 and falling, windless. All in all, a quite pleasant night - the kids are building snowmen in the street and having a great time.

Bet the City Council can't clear the roads for 7.30am tomorrow though - I live only 1.5 miles from my work, so have put out my hill boots. Bet I am the first person at work tomorrow morning. : ))

From my childhood in the South-East of England, I remember the thaw didn't come until at least February.

In Germany, where I served with the British Army, the thaw didn't occur 'til March, most years.

From that. "Latest January Thaw" means the tabloids are either talking nonsense, as usual, or they have developed a sense of humour!

Here in southern Ontario we usually get one brief thaw in January, hence the name "January Thaw". Then it's back to ice and snow for another two months at least. This year the winter was much colder than usual, almost like "the good old days". So the first thaw of the new year didn't happen until 7 February, but people still want to call it the "January Thaw"

Funny how we use expressions and phrases that are obviously erroneous. Part of being human, I suppose. :)

Up until lunch time the Met Office was forecasting snow for my locale but it is now raining and no snow WOOPIE hate snow unless it is at least 2' deep(dosn't hurt as much when you fall)pavement has been sheet ice all week now almost all gone double WOOPIE also seems to be geting warmer at least during daylight hours.

The temperatures warmed up in the night here so the snow thawed :)
I think flooding is the new problem here now. Stories all over the news of vehicles stuck in flood waters etc.

I'm off for a long commute soon, so glad the weather has improved overnight anyway.

Same here, flooding and ice jams on the creeks and rivers. And it is raining, still. The ground is so saturated, the water has no where to go, so it looks like a swamp everywhere you look.
