I have been running CUDA since the 1st day it was released, I woke up this morning to 'snow' on my screen, what happened and why? This is the 1st time it has happened. I was reading posts and see I am not the only one who has just run into this problem either, and it seems more recent. EVGA NVIDIA 9600 GT KO Vista HP Pentium D @ 3.6 Thanks! |

a reboot should fix that. i dont know how to explain this correctly, its something happened to your grafic card. |

Rebooted, and 3 hours later it came back again. Restarted again and my screen kept going black every minute or so, drivers were re-booting/re-loading over and over. I exited out of BOINC and have not had issues since. Drivers are up to day, graphics card is about 6 months old. I have a feelign this is a CUDA/SETI issue and not my hardware. |

I wouldn't be so sure that it's all software related. I have already had to RMA my EVGA NVIDIA 9800 GT back to EVGA after running CUDA on it for about 2 days. I never did hear the GPU fan increase speed while running CUDA. Found it necessary to stop CUDA and still had problems with screen artifacs and other problems related to video card. I now feel that the release of CUDA was premature. There should be built in temp monitoring of the GPU and fan control on the GPU. In fact the approach used by the people at Lunatics seems the best to me. They make use of CUDA if detected in their optimized apps without crippling one CPU core. I just wish I knew which of their optimzed apps have this feature. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

EVGA has a free application "Precision" that you can download install. It shows you real-time items which include GPU temp and GPU fan speed. Using the application you can either have the fan speed set to auto, which will raise and lower the fan speed based on temp or you can manually over-ride the fan speed to any percent you want. The card itself should measure its own temp and regulate the fan speed needed to keep it cool, correct? It works when I run the few random games I play. Idle my GPU temp sits at 49C, with CUDA it runs around 66C, fan speed is always below 40%. Did the replacement card have any issues? Thanks! |

Have not received replacement GPU from EVGA as of this date. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

I have exactly the same issues with CUDA. It will run fine for hours, nice stable GPU temp of 59-62 degrees with the fan running at 50%-55% on my BFG 9800GTX. Every so often I get the 1 second black screen as the display drivers give up and Vista restarts them, but once you get the 'snow screensaver' the only fix seems to be to reboot the PC. If you CTRL+ALT+DEL to Vistas Taskmanager/Switchuser screen the snow vanishes, but as soon as you go back to the normal desktop its back. Is there a risk of damaging graphics cards while running CUDA? As this snow effect is exactly how my last few gfx cards started behaving before they packed up. I dont think its the GPU temp as my logs show it never rises above 66 degrees. I am running 32b Vista with the latest display(180.48) and chipset drivers from nvidia. Bambi |

According to NVIDIA temperature monitoring and fan control are built into the driver. It seems that some cards aren't living up to their specs or there are things missing from the drivers. @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

Would it then be best to downgrade to 178.xx drivers, or try the newer 180.xx beta drivers? You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

I do not have any problems with the gpu-temp if cuda is running. I'm using the 180.48 drivers ... without RivaTuner gpu-temp was around 50-52°C (fan-speed 35% wich is default) , with RivaTuner now around 46-47°C (fan-speed now 45%). |

I had this issue before upgrading to the latest drivers. Bambi |

Hi, I have the same problem. After the Seti@home.Cuba crashes, I had snow on my screen. After many blue screens and other problems I removed the CUBA-Client, because there is no working on the pc during he´s working. Hope there will be a new Version without the problems very soon! Greetings FlUiD pS.: I have the actual driver from Nvidia and a 980GX2 working. |

I received my replacement GPU today from EVGA. Exact same model number, GeForce 9800 GT but it has a different serial number. Installed, booted system and installed driver. System is working ok. GPU fan is running much faster. At first I thought it was locked at 100% but I do hear it slow down sometimes but only for a few seconds then back to 100%. No screen artifacs, snow or anything like before. I have curtailed running CUDA until a new version is released by Berkeley that does not require constant attention. I believe the RMA took 2 weeks shipping back and forth but the New Year Holiday was in there also. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

I am going to see if they (Seti) releases any updates that might fix or address the issue(s), if I still have problems after the update I will RMA my card back to EVGA. I did pay the few extra dollars for the 2nd day replacement option. IMO I think they should shut down the seti/cuda aspect until some of problems are fixed, I just hope damage is not happening to peoples cards who are NOT under a nice warranty. |

I purchased two of the nvidia GeForce 9800 GT at the same time. One ran cuda for a couple of hours and then failed as reported on earlier. Been messing around with it since I received the RMA replacement. It appears that the replacement GPU has a MUCH more robust cooling fan and that it is pretty much locked into 100% speed. I have heard it slow a couple of times but for only a few seconds then back to full speed. This card makes a LOT of noise when running compared to the stock original GPU I still have. My intent is still to run cuda but only after some of the bugs are fixed. I fully expect the the new card, with it's increased cooling, will perform ok. The box stock one will probably fail and need to be RMA'd at that time. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

Ive been running into snow on the screen also this week, have to restart everytime in order to get rid of it. Quad processor, with nvidia chipset, updated to most recent drivers. My main concern and questions is, running cuda/seti on this computer, is there any reports of damage to the chipset or cards we are all running. If I blow the chipset on our computer at work, the boss is going to be pissed. Thank you for any help you can give me. |

I haven't seen any reports of blown chipsets - but onboard video or video cards may have problems with the extra heat. That being said, there's always a slight chance at running into poorly manufactured hardware when you're pushing it to its limit, which is one of the risks taken on when joining. Make sure you have permission to run SETI on your system at work before you use them. |
