Message 847365 - Posted: 31 Dec 2008, 17:02:01 UTC

Good Moerning,

This only happens with Astropulse work units.
First my network, I am here in the armpit of Quebec and the soonest we will have any kind of high speed is maybe by 2012....
When my client is trying to download an AP work unit it consistently timeouts even though it is coming in a 2.54kps (Which is about the best speed we ever get way out here) then when I click retry now I get a nag message saying no internet connection is set up . So when I am feeling bored, (or reading a Microsoft white paper) I will sit there and alternately click retry and ok and then for 15 to 30 seconds the work unit comes in until it decides to flip back to retry, at which point we start over again....

Now truth be told of course there is no internet connection set up because I have a LAN here with a real firewall that takes care of connecting to the outside world on a dedicated data line.

As I mentioned this does not occur with classic workunits only AP. Is there a way (other than blocking AP work units) to resolve this?

Kay

Hi,
I seem to be having the same problem but I have AstroPulse running along with 2 work units of Einstein@Home at the same time ( Athlon 9850 quad core ) but I have 4 work units of SETI@home Enhanced 6.03 waiting to report. I get the same no internet connection error message and I know I have connection as I am using it for this post. I have also placed Bionic on the Firewall exceptions list ( although it has not had a problem previously ). A check on sever status for Seti seems to be fine. I am also on a LAN with hispeed Cable Modem. My location is near Houston, Texas.

if this is a recent (in the last day) issue you'll see several threads stating that the seti servers aren't sending or receiving work and it may be several days before it gets resolved. Its always a good idea to red before posting. Most likely you aren't the only one with the problem.

If this is a separate issue or one that you couldn't find a thread about then by all mean post.

Only sending is a problem, receiving works fine. :-)

See the front page for news:

December 31, 2008
Our scheduling server has crashed and so no work is being distributed. This may not get fixed for a day or two.

Mine has stopped sending and receiving work also. Is there any way to find out when it will be back up?

Uploading of data works, only reporting and downloading don't (scheduler stuff), though the Server Status Page looks quite normal again. The cricket graphs are still rather flatlined, however.

Ummm I hate it when threads get derailed off into left field....

The original question I was asking refers to a problem I have been having for about 2 months now.

The problem is that I keep getting timeouts when trying to download astropulse work units. I can download regular work units with no problem and I can upload results with no problem

One difference between AP and MB work units is their size: 8 MB versus 300 KB. Do you have problems with that sized files if not using BOINC?

You could try switching from htt protocol version 1.1 to version 1.0. I know that the symptoms don't hint that way, but who knows?
To do so, you must create a text file named cc_config.xml in your BOINC data directory (if it doesn't exist already). The data directory is mentioned in the message tab of BOINC manager.
With notepad or a similar texteditor (I don't know your operating system, since your computers are hidden), enter (copy&paste) the following into that file:
<cc_config>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>
There are no lower case 'L' characters in that code, only digits '1'. More information to cc_config you can find here (if boinc.berkeley.edu is online again).
In BOINC Manager (Advanced view) select menu 'Advanced->Read config file' to activate the new configuration.

If that doesn't help, there are several protocol/debug options you can switch on via cc_config.xml. Perhaps you (or someone here, if you post excerpts of your log) can get hints from that.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Please either post the error messages you get on the downloads, or go to your account, project preferences and set "Should SETI@home show your computers on its web site?" to Yes. Save changes and we'll await until the caching on the server is gone and we can see your computers and what possible error messages you get.

Hi,

....create a text file named cc_config.xml in your BOINC data directory (if it doesn't exist already). The data directory is mentioned in the message tab of BOINC manager.

Perhaps this should be mentioned in the FAQs?

A couple of months ago I needed to set up a "cc_config.xml" file for my host and despite trawling all the available help files, wikis and FAQs I couldn't find any information on where this file was to be placed.

Although I quickly figured it out through trial and error, this is the sort of thing which should be CLEARLY documented.

TTFN - Pete.

Perhaps this should be mentioned in the FAQs?

Excerpt from BOINC FAQ Service How do I configure my client using the cc_config.xml file?:
Save it in your BOINC directory (*) as cc_config.xml .. When saving with a text editor, make sure you save as "All types". That way the editor won't auto-add a TXT extension.

(*) From BOINC 6.1 onwards, the cc_config.xml file needs to be saved in the BOINC Data directory.

Excerpt from BOINC wiki Client_configuration (link from my previous message):
For example, if you want to see messages about CPU scheduling, use a text editor (such as Notepad) to create the following file, and save it as cc_config.xml in your BOINC directory. (For BOINC v6 and later with separate program and data directories, save the file in your BOINC Data directory).

Gruß,
Gundolf

Sorry for the delay responding, as I was away.

Ok first I tried setting it to use HTTP1.0 with no difference
Second I have set the computer to visible
Third I routinely download large (> 50Mb) files overnight, my throughput averages at 8Mb per hour.
Fourth The computer in question is running XpSP3 fully patched with McAfee 8.5i anti virus and Boinc Version 6.4.5 (wxwidgets ver 2.8.7)

here is the log from today Has you can see if I manuially reconnect it downloads for a bit the errors out

Hi, Kay!

Kay

Sorry, but You can't process AP WUs due to speed of your internet connection, IMHO.

Size of every AstroPulse workunit is about 8 Megabytes and with your speed 2.54 Kilobytes You can't receive in any reasonable time (53 minutes seems too long for me), so BOINC server drops connection.

I don't think the speed of his connection has much to do with his problem. When I used to be an AOL user back in the early 90s, my 9600 baud modem could only download at about that speed and I downloaded plenty of files as large as 8MB or bigger.

As long as the TCP protocol is sending ACK commands back to the server to indicate that the data is being sent correctly, the server will keep sending the file to the host regardless of speed. If the servers are overloaded and cannot handle too many TCP sessions, then it will cause hosts to drop connections. The SETI@Home servers have been overwhelmed as of late due to various problems, so I would believe that is the more likely cause of the problem.

Further, BOINC has no real clue if an internet connection exists on the actual machine or through a router on a LAN, so the message "No internet connection found" often relates to one of several things starting with not being able to find a publicly available internet server, or not finding a working TCP/IP stack on the system. If TCP/IP is used on the LAN, then there should always be TCP/IP available, meaning that BOINC shouldn't care where the actual connection lies. Depending on the setup, if each host on that particular LAN uses a shared dial-up connection set to dial individually at each workstation, then this might be a problem for BOINC detecting an active internet connection. Without knowing the setup of the network in great detail, it would be hard to narrow it down to one single answer so easily.

Good Morning,

Oh that is what I suspected (server dropping the connections), so i guess I will have to turn off AP :( for the time being.

:) I suspected BONIC was looking to see if a dial up was configured on the local machine and thus the no internet connection message, thanks for confirming it.

As you can see by my join date and wu processed I have been with SETI almost since day 1, and like to contribute as much as possible,
