Hi I am fairly new to Linux, and i want to migrate away from windows for good. But I seem to be having problems setting up Boinc. I have Fedora 10 installed on my machine, I have installed Boinc using the rpms, I then went to the instructions and followed them, but when it came to one particular instruction I hit a wall. In the wiki says go to, Applications -> System Tools -> Boinc Manager from the GNOME menu. Select Advanced -> Select computer... from the Boinc Manager menu. Type "localhost" in for "Host name" and the contents of /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg for "Password" and hit "OK". When i tried to access gui_rpc_auth.cfg i am denied access, because it says i do not have permissions, so i am unable to copy and paste it's contents into the password. Has anyone else come across this same problem and has found a way of fixing it? or do you know how to fix it, I have been a Seti@home cruncher since Aug 1999 and I want to continue on and be Microsoft free. this is the hard part with Linux and I know someone will correct any mistakes I mention. YOu'll need to get into the Konsole as root and cd over to the boinc file you'll nedd to set the chmod to 777 this should allow you to access the files without being in as root. there are several very good install instructions out there to start boinc as a service on Linux. They can be a bit daunting to someone that isnt very familiar with Linux. The easiest way to start the boinc manager is to cd to the BOINC folder and type in ./boinc_manager that should start the graphic Boinc manager and you should be able to setup your projects like you'd do it on windows ![]() In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Thank you so much that worked a treat, I can now read the file, I have learnt something new today :o) I am beginning to see through the fog that is known as Linux. Now all I have to do is solve the connection problem, and it is not caused by the firewall. Oh boy isn't Linux fun. Does anyone know how to get round this? ![]() |

Kubuntu is just Ubuntu with the KDE desktop instead of Gnome. sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager Type that into the terminal, (you will have to put in the admin password) and it will download and install the files. Then launch Boinc Manager and it should give you the option to attach to a project. ![]() |

I also had same problem with Fedora 10. 1) Add your "user" id to the boinc group (System > Administration > Users and Groups) Edit > Preferences and uncheck the hide system users and groups select the group tab and edit boinc properties to select desired "users" (You will need to log off and on again for this to take effect) 2) As root in a terminal window add a link to /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg in the /home/"user" directory of each user allowed to use boincmgr I believe the command was ( ln -t /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg ) while you are in the "user" home directory. 3) I believe the /var/lib/boinc files already allowed group rw permissions in the package as installed. If not you will have to set them as outlined in earlier message. All this results in boincmgr connecting to the boinc service when selected from application menu. No need to select localhost and logon!! |
