Message 844162 - Posted: 23 Dec 2008, 13:31:18 UTC

Hi,

I have Windows Vista x64 and a Nvidia 9800GX2 running Boinc and Seti@home with Cuba.
Where are two different workingunits. The first have a running time from about 8 minutes and the other about 30 Minutes. Everytime the 30 Minutes unit is going to start, the display divers report an error and the unit is marked as calculate error.
Sometimes, the computer crashes with a bluescreen.
How can I stop it?

Greetings from Germany,

FlUiD

Additionally, report what you see on the BSOD. Errors like that should be recorded in Event Viewer (Start->Control Panel->Administrative tools->Event Viewer->either system or application log)

You know... I hate it when people talk in abbreviations without at least once in their post saying what it means. Vertical Looking Application Redundancy?

Statements like that aren't really helping anyone and they don't make you look 'kewler' either. (more the opposite)

Wasn't trying to be "kewler" was calling it by the name I know it by. While I was looking for this post about it.

There is only a record that the computer shuts down on an unnormal way, but nothing more. If it will happen again, I write it down!

Message 844208 - Posted: 23 Dec 2008, 14:55:22 UTC - in response to Message 844182.

I am also having trouble with Cuda. I've gotten a few blue screens and a large number of compute errors. My display also goes goofy right after a compute error sometimes. By that I mean I get a sparkling effect. This goes away after I reboot. Some of these problems are probably the fault of the 180.48 driver (beta). I installed this driver hoping it could help with some not so severe issues I was having and what I did was make everything worse. I wish I had not installed CUDA. I had no problems with my system before I started this "adventure" and now I have to reboot several times a day.

I know I can get the older version of NVIDIA driver at there site but is there a place I can get the previous version of Boinc, I don't usually keep backups because I can always download a copy. If not can I cut CUDA off?

Thanks

Older BOINC versions can still be downloaded from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php .. use 6.2.19 if you do not want to use CUDA.

Hi,

Please read this thread regarding future post of problems with CUDA if you decide to keep trying.

Also, from what I'm seeing on the errors from this pc most of the errors have to do with "Very LOw Angle Range" or VLAR which is a bug in the CUDA app and effects just about everyone in a similar way. In this message there is advice given to help prevent the problem if you would like to continue trying to use the CUDA app.

Thanks for the info. I might stick with Cuda for awhile then. Most of the other problems are probably a result of the BETA driver I installed anyway.

You can now set the project preferences not to use the GPU.

Thanks again. That will allow me to turn it off when I'm not around to monitor the system. Almost everytime a client error occurs the I either get a blue screen or that weird sparkling effect.

I got similar errors in vista 32 bit. I did not get a blue screen but my video driver crashed and then restarts itself. The problem is that I have to restart my PC or otherwise all the WU's after that first crash and restart of the video driver will result in an error.

driver version: 178.24
OS : Vista 32bit

The first task that went wrong: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1100017828

After that first crash I do get the following type of result: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1100017840

This is a known problem that the developers (Seti and Nvidia) are aware of and are trying to fix.
