That's not even the worse that can happen... just imagine all those passively cooled graphics cards and notebooks...

I wonder how many of those will get fried and die pretty quick ;)

.........That's a fact! Since my return to crunching, I've burnt through 3 gpu's & now the one on my server is on it's deathbed (all rigs on 24/7 with the exception of maintainence).

With CUDA enabled, will the capable gpu's cope with 24/7? Or will they need better cooling? If so, bang goes the quiet pc's...........

For those who feel that it was rushed out, that may be true.........However, where's that pioneer spirit? If it wasn't for a few idiots that wanted to fly, we would still be taking days to cross the Atlantic!

True..........but bye, bye quietness & possibly gpu? How long will they last running 24/7? As already stated, on my 4th burnout (all cards NVidia).

Asus,PNY,Club & Xpertvision - So far, it's been the Asus & Club cards that died...2 - 1 so far & the server card is Asus, so it looks like it'll be 2 - 2 soon. I must admit that they were running 24/7 since June 07 (again, asides from maintainence downtime).

Yes of course... show me a way of doing that on a passively cooled graphic card or on board gpu ...

When I bought my card last week I insisted on one with a fan. It also has a nice looking copper heatsink, but of course fans wear out eventually.

The noise has definately gone up. I only have one machine with a gpu card at the moment to see how things work out.

That might work for 'average joes' desktop pc .... but not on a server board nor laptop...

Still, it wont let you use CUDA and non-CUDA MB app on the same system.

Its pointless to use CUDA atm, if you dont have several CUDA devices on your rig. Well, time to switch back to optimized apps and await bugfixes.

The way I see it is that if the project actually benefits, all good and well. I have 30 rigs crunching via boinc at the moment & will increase with further customer orders & authority to install boinc.

Should all the bugs get ironed out with CUDA & the project eventually becomes CUDA orientated, leaving the cpu crunchers out in the cold, so be it. The £1000+ saved on electricity bills every year will go to upgrading my current net without any extra outlay, in which case the project & I will eventually benefit.

Just to remind everyone......"A broken clock is right twice per day & Tomorrow never comes".

David says that he is working on the ability for BOINC to run both CUDA and CPU apps simultaneously. It'll be a few weeks before it's available.

Unless they fixed something, I have 2 6.03 MB wu's and 1 6.05cuda MB running at the same time. System temps have not changed and the video card temp has not moved either (45°C). System acts as it did before but with extra processing. Some wu's that normally would not be running are in high priority but whatever. That is something that can be addressed.
