Wondering what I should do about a laptop/client that I had which
was stolen when my house was burglarized?
There was a bunch of SETI tasks Q'd up and chances are they will
never complete. Do I try to merge this with another host ?
Do I wait until all the work units are completed before the
date/time the computer was stolen? Anyway to shut off the host
asking for more work without being at the console? The reason
I ask is: who ever stole my laptop re-connected it
(after they re-named it) and it started to report completed work units - alas the last
contact was at: 11 Dec 2008 15:55:29 UTC about 13-14 hours
after it was stolen. - I even have its
last "public" IP address ( 65.69.142.37 ) Of course I have contacted
the police with this info - will see how far I get - I have been
trying to connect to it so I could take a photo of the user.

This is the host I lost with all the work units
(yea a nice new 15" MBP, less than 1.5 Months old)
Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome.

The best you could hope for is that your lappy reports some work, and the IP can be traced....
There are more than one instance of a stolen lappy being recovered by it's Seti heart reporting in....

Let your ISP know what is going on so they can monitor it's possible activity...

We luv stories of thieves being lojacked by Seti....

You may want to email davea at ssl dot berkeley dot edu with details. He may be able to setup something to monitor your account and provide the info to report to the police.

errr its Dallas... Being from the Metroplex I'd say he has better luck at finding ET than his laptop.

It appears to be in the same DSL DHCP pool that most of his other hosts use. His best bet is to find out where that IP was pointing at the time. For that he'll need to have Southwest Bell's cooperation, and to get that he'll probably need have the police helping out.

A century ago stealing ones horse would lead to a necktie party when the miscreant is caught. Now with ones entire financial history in a laptop the loss can be far greater.

I hope that the leads in this thread lead to the hideout of the rascal!
