Will it be available on TechNet? Hmm... I should go check.

[Edit]I'm not seeing it listed, unless they hold off until tomorrow.

Reasons to skip Microsofts windows 7 beta download

Flawed article:

  • The author states his Macintosh bias at the outset.
  • The author mischaracterises Windows 7 as 'Vista SP2'. Vista SP2 is a separate thing, is already in beta and should be out Q2.
  • The author doesn't seem to understand what 'Beta' status actually entails.
  • The author suggests the beta's expiration date of August is a problem. Microsoft's historical pattern indicates that there'll likely be a Beta 2 before then, and at least one Release Candidate (RC) release before it goes into production.

Yeah, I could approach this with a more tongue-in-cheek viewpoint, but I've had a morning with AV deployment issues, and seeing idiocy like that article just makes me want to dismantle it.

Mostly, this says that the author should never be a beta tester. He doesn't get the process.

I know, and I tried to keep my criticism to the message. And I was definitely in the mood to criticise something!

This probably won't be of much interest, but a 'wingman' on a WU recently done, was running Windows 7 and it seems he is a tester.

Yes, optimised apps will be a little thin on the ground for Win 7, or could it run the apps for previous versions of Windows?

To be honest, since I installed the opti-app I have typically seen reductions in executed times of over 50% - perhaps the app has found a 'sweet spot' with the MSI P35 Platinum boards in both my Core 2 machines. I certainly never saw this level of time reduction on my P4 Prescotts, understandably.

To stay on topic, I'd hope that Win 7 is as stable as an old P200 PC I had, and one that I've revived (with a huge P2/350!). It ran/runs DOS 6, Win 3.1 with the PC Tools for Windows V2 'overlay' and Win 95. Believe it or not, in spite of being, essentially, a triple-boot system, it never crashed once, in 3 years in its original form.

Beta Windows code always runs slower because all the debug code is in there. When I beta tested XP, it was 300% slower than the final product because the final was streamlined and the debug code was disabled.

I haven't had too many crashes with most MS OSes except when I did something stupid, or was using bad drivers.

The MS OS that I had the most crashes with was Windows 95, yet I still liked the OS for all its advanced 32bit features as opposed to using Windows 3.1 with Win32s installed.
