Okay, It's got me... Where is this now that Boinc 6 moved everything and it has all gone invisible :C

Sorry, my mistake, I thought the new client and CUDA was all I needed,
I only get seti@home in the project list in the client
off to create an account now.

thx for your help

Hi Everyone
I have followed the instructions and have downloaded CUDA 2.0 and the boinc client 6.4.5 and boinc sees that I have an 8800GT GPU, and I have no error messages in the logs. How can I tell if the GPU is doing anything, I dont seem to be getting a speed increase or any special CUDA units. How can I verify that everything is working correctly and my GPU is infact being used???

OMG, it's time to close tis thread here indeed. It's BETA app and your account even doesn't have tester's tag, so you even don't registered on beta....

Thanks Richard, I have read that before, & promptly lost the link & forgot its name.

Jason, I suggest to reinstall your BOINC and to choose more convenient places for binaries and data folders. Or that hell with drive C: will pursue you all your BOINC V6 life ;D

Maybe, but we all want to help and crunch as many units as possible for the cause.
Any help that you can give will be gratefully received.
I have registered an account for the BETA, how do I attach to it using boinc manager please?

@Raistmer: Might have to try that, this security by obscurity technique's got knobs on it. Relocating back to C:\BOINC where I had it in the first place.

From beta site:
NOTE: If you use BOINC version 5.2+ with the BOINC Manager, don't use this form. Just run BOINC, select Attach Project, and enter an email address and password.

Couldn't get the 5 CPU thing working possibly because it's using the GPU as a "Co-processor". BOINC doesn't count the co-processor as a CPU possibly. I guess there should be a option saying "Use Co-processor and CPU at the same time" in the new BOINC version.

1) look for cc_config.xml file in BOINC folder. If you have not it, create one.

2) look for <ncpus>0</ncpus> string in that file (or create such strings)
<cc_config>
<options>
<ncpus>0</ncpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

3) change "0" to 5 (for quad) or to 3 for duo.

4) save file and restart boinc (or chose load local preferences and read local options or smth lice this from BOINC manager menu).

Let the developers try to put out a stable 6.4 client first, before requesting enhancements to the textual information.

People running the new client and expecting miracles, a stable client and all their problems to be solved overnight, better read up on the GPUGrid forums for news.

In the mean time, if you run into problems then the people on GPUGrid are the most knowledgeable to possibly be able to help you out. (You can't expect Raistmer to be here 24/7 to answer your questions ;-))

That's why... I tried Global prefs instead of cc_config...

Gentlemen, a little perspective & reminder is in order:

The GPU ap is on the Beta site, for the Beta tester's group to perform TESTING.
It's NOT READY for Seti "Main" release & for wide-scale public use.

The folks that do testing @ Beta are generally more advanced & experienced users that volunteer to run & test to find bugs, issues etc. so they can be identified & corrected BEFORE the application is released to the general public. Their purpose is to help make a better application that is easier & friendlier to use w/ fewer problems.

THIS forum is not the proper place to ask "how to's" or report issues/concerns regarding the Beta application.
Those questions should be asked on the Beta site as the responses & info may benefit others and the greater effort there.

While this is indeed exciting news, most crunchers are better-off to resist the urge to prematurely run the GPU Beta unless they are willing to accept the issues & potential problems & are knowledgeable enough to trouble-shoot on their own FIRST. There's a reason why BOTH the BOINC 6.4.5 client and GPU application are DEVELOPMENTAL....they're not 100% ready for "primetime"....USE at YOUR OWN RISK.

Keeping this in mind will make it easier to help those here w/ issues regarding the astropulse and multibeam applications that are currently in public release.

Thanks for your consideration.

Good comment and perspective. Hopefully, a few more will be motivated to help out from the 'heads-up'.

Out of curiosity:

Is this the next stage from Mimo's work or is this a whole new version?

Which analysis routines have been put on the GPU? All GPU or is there some ping-pong tricks between the GPU and CPU?

Good luck with the development!

Happy fast crunchin',

No its a new version.
All work is on the GPU... Only 3-5% of CPU is used to feed the GPU.

just to give you guys a hint on the beta cpu time to do one wu on a 260gtx is
gpu 168.5 sec not min or hours
gpu 68 sec not min or hours
gpu 126.5 sec not min or hours

norm time on cpu is 3 hours

=) i like this when well it hit main steam any time frame

ps: given the app uses .o3 cpu well the final ver have more then 2 apps running at the same time given that it only uses 10% of my gpu power on a duel core cpu

Thanks Martin :>) The GPU ap on Beta is from Berkeley gents. They get the kudos for it & have done a great job in getting a complete multi beam application working w/ all analysis functions. It's a HIGHLY impressive accomplishment and will provide a good foundation to base some optimizing efforts once it completes Beta & goes to public release.

Current GPU efforts @ Lunatics have made significant progress towards an Astropulse application on GPU. There's still lots to do, but progress is being made including some "new approaches" into how the data is crunched and potential opportunities to exploit multithreading etc. As you may have guessed, Jason, Joe, Raistmer, Mimo, Heinz, Richard & Urs are in heavy collaboration & testing. Actually, there are several efforts underway....improving stock AP performance/accuracy, optimizing AP for CPU as well as both AP GP and MB GPU undertakings. Some techniques and "lessons learned" have relevance in more than one area of focus. Having a better understanding of how the Beta MB GPU ap works, behaves and performs also has some relevance to what the gents are doing.

I'll leave any more info/detail to the resident experts ; >)

There's some neat things happening right now that should make for a fun 2009.
Cheers!!

What kind of effect will this have on the RAC of non-GPU systems? Will the GPU ones have astronomical RACs or will non-GPU ones be cut down to really low levels? Asking this because of the auto-RAC adjustment in place now...
