I have been using BoincView now for a long time, and can't imagine life without it. But a couple of my machines are eligible to upgrade BOINC beyond the 5.10.13 they are running now. So my question is: who has experience using BV on later revs of BOINC, either the 5.10.45 or the 6.2.19 advertised on the BOINC site? Please tell me what problems that may entail. If there are roadblocks that prevent that combination, I'd like to know in advance (and probably delay any change that required me to no longer use BV). Oh, BTW, I'm on BV 1.4.2. So, successful users of BV 1.4.2 with BOINC 6.2.19, speak up! thx Dave |

I use it w/ 5.10.45, works just fine, don't use the 6 series of Boinc, though. I use it on a couple machines, one is running 1.4.2, the other is 1.5 Beta. Oh, and I have no plans to upgrade past 5.10.45 unless or until there's a real functional reason to... -Dave |

I run BoincView 1.5 Beta 8 with BoincMgr 5.10.45 under Windows XP, supervising a flotilla of 5 hosts. The main issues I see are that BoincView delivers an error message in German once every few days, after which updates cease, and that there is nothing listed in BoincView's complete tab, ever (I miss it). On the wildly positive side, I enjoy 1.5 Beta 8's feature of allowing multiple result select in the standard Windows style for such functions as suspend, resume, abort, and Update. |

Hmmnm, does the 1.5 beta do anything cool? If so, which 0f the 6 1.5 betas (that I see on the BV site, such as it is) do you have? Dave |

Yes, thanks, your post snuck in while I was writing the question, sorry. But my look at the BV site shows Betas up to 7, so where does Beta 8 come from ? thx Dave |

I get that error too, I thought it was just me. The 6 series of BOINC allows that too. Daniel |

I also use 1.5 Beta 8, I like the way you can set up groups to view, in the computers area, it also seems to remember settings a little better than 1.4.2 does. Like if I close a window, next time I start it up, that window is closed, but with 1.4.2 it seems to go back to the default settings a lot. One thing I don't like as much, it clears selections when it polls a computer (I run this on a Vista machine, BTW). If I have a specific computer selected, and am in the projects tab, and select a project that I want to update, if I don't hit the update button before the computer I have selected polls, it clears it when it polls, so when I hit update it doesn't do anything. 1.4.2 doesn't do that... You can solve that by having longer polling times or being quick with the mouse, though. I think most of my machines are set to poll at 10 seconds. -Dave [Edit] Answer to where to get it, on the main BV page, on the left, click the "Download" link, it's listed as the current beta release on that page. |

Ahhh, I see - was not looking carefully. But is the Completed tab really permanently empty? That's quite useful if you want to check and see what and how a machine has been doing recently. Dave |

If someone either has seen valid completed information in 1.5 Beta 8, or can designate an older version for which completed still worked and multi-select already worked I'd be eager to hear it. |

I currently have DV 1.5 beta8 running with boinc 6.4.4 and showing the completed tab info OK found you have to do a new install of DV 1.4.2 and let it run a couple of days to setup the logs. Then copy DV 1.5 over top. Should then work. I also have all logging on and days set to 7 days. You need to check that after a few days you are able to open the import logs under tools the file takes the form of boinc_log_2008-12-10.csv If you then open this file and let DV read it it seems to fix the no completed problem. Hope this helps someone |

If someone either has seen valid completed information in 1.5 Beta 8, or can designate an older version for which completed still worked and multi-select already worked I'd be eager to hear it. I use BV 1.2.5 on Bonic 6.2.19 and 5.10.45, OS Vista/XP Home, and all the tabs seem to work as well as the rest of it, though I haven't been using it that long. I'm able to adjust how many days worth of completed tasks I want to few as well. I've never found a reason to update from there, so it may be worth checking out if you haven't already. |

Thanks all for the inputs. @dnolan - what's your thought on sticking to 5.10.45 - something in particular, or just basic "if it ain't broke......", which has great merit for me as well..... ps have always liked your fluffy friend avatar. Dave |

I use BV 1.5 Beta 8 and all my machines are 6.2 or 6.4 (alpha level, don't DL unless you are testing). No problems with BV other than the fact that it seems to eat RAM if you leave it running long enough. BOINC WIKI |

Thanks all for the inputs. Both "if it ain't broke" and I don't really like the way it's re-organized for the 6 versions. I run the 5 versions in Vista, too, and it works fine for me. I know it's not "the way it's supposed to be", but heck, it still works fine!
Thanks! My 8 year old Norwegian Forrest cat, Bart. -Dave |
