I am trying to swap from Ubuntu 32 to Debian 64

I received an error message

One peculiarity was that on my keyboard @ is given by the " key, and vice versa...

could this be relevant?

That's two single quotes, not one double quote.

For your problem, see this post at the BOINC Message boards.
