Hi Folks,
I'd like to do a comparison on how slow New Zealand broadband really is compared to other parts of the world. Coz' I feel (and others in NZ) that New Zealand is a whole generation behind in the Internet Speed Game.

If you could please layout results like this (using speedtests' forum link):

Data Cap (if any): 6GB per month

And please say if you think your speed is fast or slow...

Thanks,
Luke.

- Luke.

Here's a link to Speedtest.net

My results are....

Not too bad...

Mine is standard cable from Bigpond Australia. (Just across the lake)

[Edit: Data speed Shaped after 12GB, but no extra charges for blowing the cap]

I consider it reasonably fast compared to the ADSL plans here, but there are indeed cable "extreme" and ADSL2+ plans available here for extra cash. If you don't have those available, then yes, probably your assumption of a generation behind us might be right. But not by much, they only the faster plans late last year / early this year I think.

Here's mine...

Closest:

Farthest West NA area server:

Farthest East NA area server:

Gotta love PowerBoost!

According to the Summary tab on SpeedTest, mine is faster than 96% of connections globally. My average is 9863 KB/s downloads and 1199 KB/s uploads (all done on North American servers). It helps that I'm in an area that Comcast uses to test new high-speed broadband technologies. Sometimes it doesn't help though - some of the servers in Canada only give me around 5,000 KB/s downloads.

Overall, I'm happy with it.

From Twin Cities Minnesota to Auckland:

...boy did that bring my average down! Look at that ping! lol

Wellington server seems much better though...

...and crap at Napier and Christchurch servers

Overall, seems to be below average connections to NZ...

Hi Luke, did a speed test here and got this:-

Then I did the same test to the Wellington Server and got this:-

The first one I'm really impressed with as my service is supposed to be 10Mb max!
Unlimited with no cap apparently, but a fair use policy is supposed to apply!

Hope this helps your research!

<edit> Virgin Media is a UK cable company, and has a 20Mb service running. They are trialling a 50Mb service.</edit>

regards, Gizbar.

Here's mine. Something is definitely amiss:

Those numbers are for the closest server, which is probably hosted by the ISP.

For a server slightly further away,

Hosted by someone else I presume.

Here's an especially disappointing one:

Hi Gizbar, and everybody else!

Thank you all so far! I pay NZ$40.00 per mo. for my connection, which is roughly $24.00 U.S.

Right now... after reading the results... I'm not very happy with my connection. But it is one of the fastest in my country!
I live in Wellington, NZ, so that is the best server you can use if you want results of my area.

Thanks again, and I hope to see more results from others here!
- Luke.

Holy frick! What the H-E-double-hockey-stick kind of connection is that? I'd give a kidney for those speeds!

Try connecting to the servers in New Zealand - I want to see what kind of speeds you get to them.

Luke, just chucked some figures into xe.com
and got the following back.

Cost £46.00 per month, which is approx $72.07 US Dollars per month or $122.12 NZ Dollars per month.

Broadband alone is £25.00 per month, $39.18 US, $66.44 NZ.

That does include landline phone (but not cost of calls), cable tv (approx 80 channels), and cable broadband (10Mb, unlimited service, fair use policy).

I think it's pretty fast.

regards, Gizbar.

So much for the advertised 8-12Mbit...

(But I am using Azureus at the moment, so that steals away bandwidth)
