I gave up on Seagate 4 or 5 years ago. I had a run of 4 bad drives in a year and just quit buying them.

I pretty much stick with Western Digital for now. I used to swear by Maxtor for years, but they're at the point where I only swear AT them now.

It's called how to make you spend money faster so our bottom line continues to grow faster than can occur naturally. May have something to do with what is going on over on Wall Street, but I could be wrong.

Didn't Meredith Johnson (Demi Moore) change the specs for the air filtration in the factory... Could be the cause of the recent dependability issues in addition trailing performance as of late... Don't worry...Tom Sanders (Michael Douglas) wins the sexual harassment case and keeps his job... Everything should be back to normal before long =) Disclosure (1994)

Oh wait... those were Arcamax drives... Didn't Seagate buy them a few years ago ;-)

Well, this thing is deader than a 50 cent brick.......
I shoulda known.......
I bought 3 of these things and the first one failed while trying to install the OS.....I called that a fluke.
Now this on is dead after a few months......I call that a POS.
The 3rd one is still in the package........I call that a paperweight......

I had always thought that Seagates were good drives. Not anymore! I'll steer clear of them. Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna also steer clear of PartsPC at Pricewatch. Last June it sent me an incompatible processor/motherboard assembly and its terms for returns were impossible.

My 2bits: I don't remember a time Seagate was ever 1st in class for reliability, and I've been watching the industry on and off for about 25y. (Obviously not seagate alone) What shocked me was how bad the IBM drives I had were, back when IBM had a storage business. I still remember paying too much for a high speed scsi IBM driver at Fry's, just to get the 'state of the art', and proceeded to heat my coffee cup and the entire building with crappy thing (not to mention the earmuffs I needed due to its high pitched whine); I shad imilar experience when I bought two matched IBM drives for a hardware raid I made; yikes, no wonder they sold the product line.

WD has been generally reliable for me for my 'hobby' computers; you know the ones where the drives go in and out of old beat-up computer cases on a weekly basis, dropped on the bench, and otherwise mistreated by hasty fingers and an impatient mind.

I've been staying away from Seagate too. I had been using Hitachi Deskstars. Over the last year or so I have bought 12 of them (500 gig) I've only had 1 failure. Just bought a bunch of Samsung 1t drives and hopeing they work out well.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the ST-238R -- you can't take a decent 20 megabyte MFM drive and cram 30 megabytes onto it with an RLL controller, even a good one like the Western Digital WD1003S-RAH.

Trouble is, everyone makes bad drives from time to time.

IBM did so well with their "Deathstars" that they left the drive business and sold to Hitachi. Is Hitachi smarter? Don't know.

I've not had great results with Samsung, but they may have cleaned up their act.

Same with WD.

Had great results with Quantum, but they were bought by Maxtor, who was bought by Seagate.

I've had Maxtor and they were good drives and the software was good.
I like WD the best they have the best software and I prefer WD.
I just got 2 Seagate and the drives are OK but the software sucks big time.
I got the Seagate’s for the price but I think my next drives will be WD just for the software alone they are worth it.

Price don't mean nada when the thing crashes taking all you have saved along with it........

Next time I buy a drive I think I'll take a little more time to shop and have a look at MTBF numbers.............

Oh just a measly 20GB drive? Try having to go through 10 Seagate ST-4096 MFM(5.25" FH Drives) hdds to get 1 that worked! And no I wasn't using an RLL controller. :D

Now those suckers were Real Bricks!

What's with recent Seagate hard drives???? . . . <snip>

What model number(s) were these? I also have had good luck with Seagate in the past. And WD too for that matter. I may stick with Seagate in the future, but might want to avoid that specific model.

Barracuda 7200.11 500Gb ST3500320AS

Purchased as OEM bare drives from Tiger Direct a few months ago.....

The 3rd Brick has loaded the OS....here we go again....

Such a time consuming pain.....

Load the OS
Edit the registry to activate autologon
Load the video drivers
Load the mobo drivers
Load the network drivers
Load the audio drivers
Apply the service packs

Etc., etc., etc.........
