Message 895848 - Posted: 17 May 2009, 10:08:40 UTC - in response to Message 890033.

Hello @ all,

... using BOINC on my IBM/Lenovo R50 (some times ago) and now on my R51 caused / causes the above described freezing. That was the reason, I stopped supporting SETI about three years ago.

Now - rejoining SETI - the "freezing-problem" appeared again: Nothing helps but a cold reboot - trying Alt+Strg+Del, Esc or Alt+F4 - no effect.

So I disabled the screensaver and that's it. I think it's not a problem of hardware or drivers - it seems to be the screensaver!
Normally, I don't use screensavers. But some other savers - I just tried in cause of the "freezing-problem" - run without any problem on my notebooks and I think, that the R-Series from IBM/Lenovo is not an exotic system.

Finally I hope, that you understand my rusty English - school is out since 25 years and the only English I use are the terms of VBA-programming.

Greetings from Germany,
Guido

It certainly suggests that something is incompatible between the screen saver code and your system. Simply stating that not using the screen saver and the problem goes away doesn't mean that the problematic code isn't within the graphics drivers on your system - but of course the problematic code could be within the screen saver, but its too difficult to tell this early in the troubleshooting process.

Have you tried updating to the latest graphics drivers for your system to see if that solves the problem?

I understood you just fine! :)

Hi, OzzFan,

my System - including specific IBM/Lenovo drivers - is always up-to-date (using i.e. ThinkVantage System Update for IBM ThinkPads). Platform is Win XP - also updated.
So: I still have not any problem (I don't need the screensaver) and posted only to show, that the freezing is not a problem of Dell-machines or exotic configurations, but - may be - even of an original and not upgraded mass product like the ThinkPad R-Series.

Because I need my "private" notebook (besides my main professional activities for a secondary activity as a Business Consultant) running everytime perfectly, I won't try any manual modification on graphic drivers:

Never touch a running system!

So I wanna tell the "freezed" users: SETI is running without screensaver, too!

Best regards, Guido

Sorry Guido, I misunderstood your first reply. Thanks for jumping in and letting people know that it works without the screen saver. :)

Hi,
I've been running BOINC for years with no problems. I don't often go into the manager and look at messages, but this week I noticed a Message saying there was a new version (6.6.28) so I downloaded and installed it and guess what? My screensaver started freezing just as described here.

After being driven crazy for a few days I discovered I still had the install from my previous old version 6.2.14, so I've re-installed that and all is well again.

But - I presume the later version(s) are better in some way, and don't want to be always stuck on an old one - presumably it may even stop working one day. I have learned from this thread that it keeps on working when the screensaver isn't running, which is good to know, but I LIKE the screensaver.

From some of the posts here it sounds like attempts have been made to fix the fault, so I thought you'd like to know (?) that it's still there. I'm not at all techie but this is running on an HP pc with Windows XP Prof (at work, where I have very little control over pc settings etc.)
