Message 825981 - Posted: 2 Nov 2008, 4:57:56 UTC

I rebooted the linux machine and it showed several updates available, installed them and rebooted again. All of a sudden the downloads came right down.

It would appear there is some sort of server problem with the downloads- i've got one that's stuck & it times out almost as soon as it starts to download.

Message 826045 - Posted: 2 Nov 2008, 12:54:54 UTC

I ran out of 2 days of WU's, now when I try to update I get the following message:
Sun 02 Nov 2008 01:52:37 PM CET|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
Sun 02 Nov 2008 01:52:42 PM CET|SETI@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
It always asks for 0 seconds of work. I want to have 2 days of work so my computer can crunch again.
Please help.

If you don't ask, you won't get.

You'll have to work out why your BOINC isn't asking for work (debt to another project?) - that problem is on your own machine, not the Berkeley servers.

None of my native Linux boxes have been able to download units for the last 48 hours. They keep failing with the same "http error" or "project server" errors the other posters are getting. All my Windows boxes are "business as usual".

And yes I tried all the usual reboots, restarts, DNS cache clearing, yadda yadda but still no joy

Interestingly, a Linux virtual machine, running on a Windows host is getting through to the download servers without problem.

Could some networking guru please explain, what the difference is in the way the two OS's handle networking, and why one OS is blocked and the other gets through ? ( I remember the same thing happened with MACS a few months ago)

How do you mean, if you don't ask, you won't get?
I ask all the time, but only once per hour or so, I get one or two WU's which are crunched long before I get the next ones.
So, now and then it is working. Uploading is no problem at all, downloading is the big problem.

If it is something here in my computer then please somebody tell me what to do. The Boinc software tells me now and then the servers maybe temporarily down. So I do think it is not my problem but it's on the other side.

I was referring to the message log you posted earlier: Requesting 0 seconds of work - your BOINC is not asking for work.

You said you are trying to hold a 2 day queue of work. Where are you setting that - here in your web-based account preferences, or locally in BOINC Manager? If you're setting it on the web, are you sure that there isn't a local setting over-riding the web setting?

Another possibility: what are your computer's time statistics (last five lines on the detailed computer view on this website). How do they compare with

% of time BOINC client is running 99.9451 %
While BOINC running, % of time host has an Internet connection 95.9915 %
While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed 99.9925 %
Average CPU efficiency 0.991397
Task duration correction factor 0.1078

Any information in this?
I wonder why the system is asking for 0 seconds of work. I can't find it anywhere in my settings, not local not on the web.

Probably silly to even ask ( but you never know ) and it's already been implied by Richard, but do you have No New Tasks set or Allow New Tasks on BOINC Manager?

No, I looked there and that settings is okay.
I did click the line "Do network communication" in the advanced menu of the Boinc software and suddenly the WU's came in. Now I have a buffer of 3 days or so. I have no idea why it didn't work before but for the time being I can crunch again on full power.
Thanks for the help.

This just worked for me on all of the 3 stalled Linux computers
1) Abort all stalled downloads
2) Stop BOINC Client
3) Run network setup wizard, No settings should need to be changed, just hit Enter on each page till the wizard is completed. This gives the network system a refreshed config file and a full restart.
4) Reboot
5) Open BOINC and hit update on SETI, the manager should contact the servers and request work which should then start to download
6) You may need to close and open the client a couple of times for final success.

I had tried all these steps individually a couple of times with no success, it was only when I rolled all 3 into one concerted effort that the downloads succeeded.

A late thought, I didn't try the "Reset Project" button, this might help too.

I'm getting "No work from Project" messages.
A quick look shows the Ready to Send buffer is as good as 0, and looking at Scarecrow's Graphs it appears the assimilators haven't been assimilating since the last outage, so i suspect we're out of disk space again.

It would appear from the Cricket Graphs that something has tipped over in the server closet again.........

Have not been able to report completed work for a couple of hours now...........

Same here -- I realize that after the weekly Tuesday 6 hour outage there is a recovery time of 6 to 162 hours -- perhaps this is part of that.

I'm afraid not.......if we were were still in recovery mode, the server traffic would be very high.....not dropping to nothing. It'll probably be down until tomorrow morning unless somebody has insomnia and rambles over to the lab to do some late night kicking.......

No uploads here.... but getting downloads.

Despite all the problems the project is having at Berkeley it will not stop me crunching Seti. My farm only gets powered down when I go on holiday, but my laptop goes with me..... and carries on crunching.
