In order to crunch AP WU's, I removed the optimized app. AK_V8_winx64_SSSE3x , but after faults, I reinstalled it, now it 'asks' for this file and it's signature, while it's already inplace.
It constantly tries to download this file, with no result, ofcoarse.
But all the crunched WU's are now worthless, now I gonna revert back to 5.10.45.
The, to me, the only stable release.(And their previous ones.)
Sorry to my wingmen, once again :( .

Perversely, I slightly messed up an installation for an Enhanced App, which meant that once I'd cleared the WUs I had, I'd detatch and the 'ghost WUs' would get resent to other PCs.

Guess what? When I reattached to the project, it dumped the latest version of BOINC on my drive (I was running 10.45) and my Enhanced App has vanished! If there is one thing that really upsets me, its people dumping their choice of software on my machine - I didn't ask for this latest version as I was quite happy with 10.45 and the Enhanced App. Worse still, I got an AP thrown at me and I can't give any machine, that much time to crunch those damned things in the given time.

Who on Earth is deciding what software version I should be running, when I re-attach?! The AP is going to be aborted, I'm already set to not request further work and once the normal WUs are cleared, I'll reinstall 10.45 and the Enhanced App. Believe me, I came close to removing all traces of BOINC from all the PCs!

No project that I know of can "dump" any version of BOINC on your machine. Projects only have the ability to automatically upgrade their own science app, but not BOINC itself. BOINC can only be upgraded by the user.

Further, once you have an optimized app (using the app_info.xml file), you are responsible for upgrading your own science app, and upgrading BOINC will never delete your optimized app primarily because BOINC doesn't know that you're using an "optimized" app. All BOINC knows is that you are using a customized app for a different platform. The app_info.xml file functionality was created so that people on unsupported OSes such as OS/2 or specialized versions of *nix could compile their own compatible applications and share them with others that would like to crunch as well.

Because of this, BOINC will never touch your science apps, preferring to let the projects do that on their own, or in the case of app_info.xml by letting the user upgrade when a new version is available or compiled.

When you detached from SETI, it erased the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder which contained your optimized app and the app_info.xml file. Then when you reattached it recreated the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder but with nothing in it. It then downloaded the current normal app and associated files it needed.

Ah ha, so thats how it works...my thanks to you both for that info. All the same, I'm having a job to remember the last time a prog was downloaded and installed, or uninstalled, come to that, without knowing it was happening. I've been watching the boards with respect to the latest version of the software and there have been enough people having problems with it, for me to want to err on the side of caution and stick with 10.45 - then there is the issue with not having a machine on long enough to even consider running AP units. That alone, essentially precludes conciously using the latest software, but the Project downloaded an AP unit, all the same! It just goes to show, that even solicitors can have bad days! rofl

:)

I think there's a slight misunderstanding here. AstroPulse science apps and workunits can be downloaded by any version of BOINC. I've seen people running BOINC v4.19 who have been doing AstroPulse. AP isn't limited to BOINC v6.x or newer. This is because AP is simply a new science app that is automatically pushed out to clients regardless of BOINC version unless their preferences state not to download it.

Hope that helps! ;)
