Ziggy still won't take his pill ..LOL

What does poor Ziggy need a pill for?

Kitties don't like taking pills, hopefully It's nothing more serious than for an internal parasite.

Ollie had either an leaking lymph node or a blocked saliva gland a few months back (sure as hell wasn't going to pay NZ$150 to narrow 2 down to 1). I hid the antibiotics for said problem inside his meat. And he's not even 2 yet. :-(

First.......the real instructions.......

How to Give a Cat a Pill

Getting a pet cat to eat a pill can be nearly impossible. Here are some tricks suggested by vets to make it easier.

[edit] Steps
Crushing the Pill Method

1. Crush the pill into a very fine powder.
2. Mix it with a few drops of salad oil.
3. Smear the mixture with your finger on the cat's flank or back end (the buttox). Being the fastidious creature that it is, it will lick the whole mess off its fur or tail end.
4. Be SURE to check with your vet first. Some pills are intended to digested slowly, and the crushing method would give your cat a too concentrated dose too quickly.

Hiding the Pill Method

1. Hide the pill in a bite of a special food that the cat rarely or never gets. Be sure to ask the vet about incompatible foods before doing this. Cream cheese works best, but you could also try baby food.
2. Acclimate the cat to the treat by giving it some of the food without the pill.
3. Let the cat eat the food with the pill in it out of their dish or from your finger. Because the cat is excited about the treat, the cat usually never knows they ate a pill.
4. If the cat won't take the pill whole try crushing. Make sure to ask the vet whether the pill is safe to be given when it's crushed BEFORE trying this.
* Place the pill on a metal spoon
* Place another metal spoon on top of the pill and press down.
* Crush the pill and leave the powder in a neat pile inside of the spoon.
* There are also pill splitters and pill crushers available commercially at stores that carry pet supplies.
* Mix the powder with a small amount of cat food, treat or other liquid. The liquid from a can of wet cat food works well.

Wrap the Cat Method

1. Fill a syringe (without the needle) with a few milliliters of water. Have that ready
2. Wrap your cat carefully, like a burrito, in a towel to provide a sense of security and keep you from getting scratched.
3. Open the cat's jaws by pressing thumb and forefinger on the jaw hinges.
4. Hold the head back with one hand and throw the fragment of pill down the throat with the other.
5. Point the end of the syringe into the back of the cat's throat and inject a bit of water.
* Kittens are not strong enough to object and will grow used to it easily.
6. Hold the cat's mouth closed and stroke or massage its neck (this encourages the cat to swallow) until you are sure the pill went down (if you were able to get the fragment down the throat deeply enough, the cat will swallow the pill immediately). You can also blow lightly into the cat's nose after closing their mouth - this action also forces them to swallow.
7. It is almost certain the cat has swallowed the pill if he/she starts to lick its' nose.

On a Chair Method

1. Get a chair with a backrest.
2. Fill a syringe (without the needle) with a few milliliters of water. Have that ready
3. Pick your cat up by the tail and scruff your cat (i.e. gently grip the skin on the back of the neck).
4. Facing the back of the chair (with the seat facing away from you), lower your cat until her front paws can rest on the top of the backrest of the chair while keeping her scruffed.
5. Make sure your cat's hind legs are dangling and not resting on the chair.
6. Due to the angle your cat is dangling while being scruffed (with front paws resting on the top of the backrest), she should be looking up with her mouth slightly open.
7. Take the pill and push it down her throat, behind her tongue. Make sure to use excessive force, as the kitty may not accept it. If you are touchig anything inside the cat, you slighty too far, or depending on weight, not far enough. The angle your cat is at, she will automatically swallow the pill. This step will take some practice, but after a few times, you should have it down.
8. Point the end of the syringe into the back of the cat's throat and inject a bit of water.

And then, the humorous ones......because you will need them after trying the first ones......

I didn't write this; I don't know who did. Someone sent it to me in an email. It's funny as hell! Enjoy!

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of the cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil, and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of Scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw t-shirt away and fetch a new one from the bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie the little @!!!#!#$%'s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of steak filet. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

15. Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and remove pill remnant from right eye. Call furniture shop on the way home to order a new table.

16. Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have hamsters.

How do give a dog a pill:

1. Wrap it in cheese.

Makes sense, Angel just gets hairballs I think, The dry cat food She has now is as organic as I can get without making It myself of course. And of course I know when She's about to hurl and have been training Her to accept My Help, Repetition helps a lot as do some soft words and stroking of the fur afterwards of course. Oh and She craves TUNA after 1pm.

Yes, that Purina is good stuff...my little darlings (and the not so little) have been happily chomping it for about the last 2 months or so, off and on. They usually have Purina One, but were more than happy with that one - they just don't seem to like any other brand though (Iam's etc) although they did seem to like Hills 'Science Diet'. Sometimes I think it would be cheaper to buy a chicken, cook it, let it cool, put it in the middle of the kitchen floor and get out of there, fast!

I loved the post about giving a cat a pill - all of it sounds very familiar. I only hope my laughing didn't wake the neighbours up. However, there is a much simpler way to do it. About 6 months ago, I came across a 'pill syringe' and it works brilliantly on cats. Its like a syringe, with a clear, hard plastic tube on the end (instead of a needle) and on the end of that tube are a pair of plastic claws. The plunger of this thing, has a rod on the end of it, that goes inside the tube and extends about 1/4" past the claws. You just pop the pill in the claws, move the plunger until the end of the rod is about 1/2" from the pill, put the tube in the cat's mouth and give the plunger a quick press. Hey presto; one pill, usually delivered to the back of the throat and gone!

This is what I feed Angel, Before 1pm that is(I don't feed Her Tuna before 4:30pm as a rule, But exceptions will be made for the holidays when I have to be elsewhere), I bought the 6lb bag and I won't need another one until March or so and for Me that's $21.54 and a 1/4 tank of gas as Petsmart doesn't have a Barstow CA store and their not likely to in the near term either I'd think, Shipping is worse than driving 45 miles one way.

Iona, can you post me a link here, where I can buy such a contraption. Mark posted the "How to give a cat a pill for me." I have the meds on hand for Ziggy, but I don't want to him to leave any skidmark on ME...
Thanks in advance
