Got my first SETI@home Enhanced 6.03 WU on my WinNT 4.0 Server and it seems that seti will be the next project that stops supporting WinNT 4.0.

Error message:

Restarting task 07jl08ab.29468.10706.8.8.42_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 603
Task 07jl08ab.29468.10706.8.8.42_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

I didn't reset the project cause it doesn't make much sense to waste more time. I know this behaviour from other projects when they start using new compiler versions that do not consider WinNT 4.0 any longer.

I think it's time to say good bye to my good old PDC.

You are correct---Seti doesn't support NT or 95 anymore.

The link that Blurf provided is to the workaround for this.

Thanks a lot guys, but the box will be replaced soon, so I'm not wasting more time with it. My new PDC will be a one with four brains, probably a Q9550 with Win 2003 32 bit.

I thought 'also works on Windows 95 and NT 4.0' was mentioned on http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php for an older version of BOINC? Shouldn't SETI@Home be able to run on that version of BOINC?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Run a couple of other BOINC projects in the mean time. Move the folder to the new machine when it comes.

The issue is that BOINC supplies source code which each application must include in order to be able to work with the core client. That code has been updated as part of the effort to achieve Vista compatibility. The primary reason to issue the 6.0x setiathome_enhanced is to have the new separated graphics needed for Vista, so it has to be built including the new BOINC code. The new code unfortunately does things for Vista compatibility which make it incompatible with Win95 and WinNT.

It would be possible to build the 6.0x source code with an older version of the BOINC code, but it would be nearly identical to the 5.2x versions. Eric's workaround of providing a download of the 5.27 package with an appropriate app_info.xml provides the functionality without requiring building and testing a special version for the few of us still running 95 or NT.

I guess its progress.... but I still have a number of old machines that use NT4. Like my old dual Pentium Pro 200 mhz. Why bother with such old kit?. But its still fun to use the old machines now and then to do the odd work unit or two on an old operating system. Getting the latest version of Linux on these old machines is not always possible. Oh well its progress.

As with AP, if NT4 isn't supported, then why is the project sending the 6x apps to NT4 hosts in the first place?

In this case since 5.27 is developed and released, they should just leave it alone for NT4 hosts, or drop them completely.

In fact since this sets a precedent for eliminating a class of stock running machines from participation, then I propose the excuse for not cutting off 3x and 4x hosts is now invalid, and they should be eliminated from the population as well.

I have been running BOINC, SETI and Einstein four years on a 400 MHz PII Deschutes running SuSE Linux, always updated. Now I have an AMD Opteron 1210 at 1.8 GHZ, always on SuSE Linux, and it runs SETI, Einstein, CPDN, CPDN Beta, QMC, LHC. It is much faster, but an Astropulse WU took 115 hours on it.

Yes, of course it won't be lazy until the change. There are still 17 active projects running on that good ol' P3 and yes, I will move the whole DIR to the new box or I will let it run dry before I shut it down for its retirement.

Hope this is not off topic. With Vista nearing it's 2nd year & Windows 7 in the offering, how long before the project find XP outdated?

When XP is not supported and I suspect in software(programming wise, Not in patches or updates) It'll be supported for a long time after MS has stopped selling It.

It isn't the project deciding as much as the project being forced to make a choice.

Vista requires certain changes to BOINC to meet the security model.

Those changes require features of the Windows API that are not present in NT.

That changes the BOINC API.

When SETI adopts the newer BOINC API to support Vista, the science application no longer runs on NT.

The same thing will happen to XP when Windows "advances" make the XP era API outdated.

While not many people will be bothered about the loss of NT4 its a shame for other reasons. The hardware requirement is low and often free if you look around a bit. You dont need much disk space, low resolution graphics cards, 128 meg ram and your away. Its easy to set up and install. But it would never run the quad core jobbies or HT cpu's. So its got to go.
The pace of progress will alienate us all.
