No stats updates for 5 days -> I will suspend SETI@Home until they figured out how to resolve this issue (going on holidays is O.K., but not without replacement!).

What's the issue, Martin?

Your credits are all there, safe and sound, and when they update the XML feed, you're gonna have a big day!!

Statistics is likely the least important function, and under the circumstances I'll bet they know the problem -- they turned it off to reduce the load.

I'd rather have work to crunch that an instant update to Boincstats......
But it still would be nice if it all was working up to par again....I'm sure Eric is aware of it.

msattler,

I am with SETI@Home for almost 10 years now and I expect a little professionalism by now - or at least some information about ongoing problems on the front page. It is MY computers and MY electricity bill (plus a few donations) that I offer to the team. Therefore it is MY decision to suspend or quit this project if they do not follow the basic rules of customer relations (not to talk about customer satisfaction).

Yes, Martin.......
It IS your decision, and one I shall respect. All I am saying is that the export of stats to 3rd party sites is about the last priority at the moment for Eric and Matt.
They have a lot more on their plate right now.

And like I said....your credits are safe and sound......they are just not being reported right now to the 3rd party sites. All is well.

This is not a commercial undertaking, but a scientific one. And one that has seen it's share of difficulties.

You might join the ranks of those in the donations challenge thread that have donated a few bucks to the cause, if you care about the project.

If not, I wish you well on whatever project you think is more worthy of your computer resources......carry on, my friend.

Best Regards,
Mark

In order to have truly "professional" customer relations, you have to fund to a level that you can afford enough staff to do customer relations.

Personally, I'm amazed at just how much SETI is doing with their vanishingly small funding.

Would I like more? Sure. But rather than spending it on Customer Relations, I'd like them to have a couple more people to help with the technology -- and maybe a bigger server room.

As far as I am concerned, customer relations are just fine.

Matt's 'technical posts' over the last number of months have been a great 'reaching out' to those of us who have some understanding of the way the project works, but not of all the nuts and bolts of it.

It is enlightening to see what they have to deal with day by day.

We never had that level of communication before.

Martin--

Your time crunching for seti is impressive and appreciated.

They have been very professional in doing all they can.

With 2 people out on vacation (Matt being one of them), they are focussing on getting the servers repaired. When you're short-staffed, it's either fix the servers or post to the message boards. I'd rather they go in favor of repairing the issues with the servers. I do know Eric has posted some updates on threads in this Number Crunching forum.

Sometimes patience is the best virtue...I promise your credits won't be lost. You can see them in your Seti Accounts window...they're not going to vanish.

Um, in all the industries I work in customers pay for services or goods. (Donations are welcome, but they don't make you a customer.) I suggest you demand a full refund for all the goods and services you have paid for. I'm assuming you saved all the reciepts.

Then stop wasting electrons, and my time.

You obviously did not read my last post...........

I wished you a fond adeau from Seti, if that is what you wish.
Seti does not charge you for participating, though your local electric company might well do so, mine certainly does.
This is a love of labor, a task of dreams. If your dreams do not take you in the same direction that most of ours does.......travel on down the road.
There appear to be many here in the donations thread that might quibble with your thoughts.........
No further arguments with me, you are free to do what you choose.

Best Regards,
Mark

Let's make this easy for Martin to understand...

So go, already! I'm not going to miss you. If you don't like the way S@H is run, take off and find something else...please.

I agree, it is wonderful and even preferable to be polite. But I am becoming really tired of people who loudly claim through these forums (fora?) that they just can't stand it anymore because their meaningless credits aren't updated or whatever the perceived issue may be. It is counterproductive for those of us, and I believe it is most of us, who really want to advance the cause of S@H or whatever project we choose to crunch. WE DON"T MEED THESE FOLKS. To coddle them is to encourage them to stick around and whine. I would much rather our crunch base be smaller and more dedicated than have Matt, Eric, et al put up with the whiners.

Yes, he is free to follow his own quests, absolutely. He is NOT free to try to drag us or the S@H management, in this case, along in these quests.

I have been unhappy with a few projects over my time with the BOINC network. I just left. No fanfare, no whining, I just left because their aims did not follow mine or, for whatever reason, their apps were adversely impacting my other projects.

I have pointed out problems with S@H in the past. I do not chime in when many others are reporting a common problem, that is just a waste of forum space. If the problem has been sufficiently intolerable, which it almost never is, I temporarily stop work until the problem is addressed. There is no grand announcement that I am doing so, that helps absolutely no one.

Just my opinion and that is all it is, just my opinion. But I will assert that I am not alone in this opinion.

Jim

Is there some kind of cash prize for having the highest BOINC RAC for the day? If someone is offering a prize, can you post the URL?

I thought the point was to do science. Maybe I'm wrong.

Calm down, all your credits are in the vault and you'll see them in .xml some time soon.
