What's the ETA on when SETI will rise from the sarcophagus. |

So was Count Dracula. He couldn't bear sun, I'm guessing that SETI servers have a problem with weekends :-) Regards, John. |

I'm actually sort of surprised that there, seemingly, isn't anyone in an on-call status. Nothing will get someone ready for the "real" world like some on-call for a week, sucking the time out of one's life. : ) (I just came "off-call" about 10 minutes ago.) I'm in Edmond...dreaming of my Seattle Days |

It's almost 8:00 am in Berkely....and the boyz should be arriving in the lab shortly. Let's hope this is an easily recoverable situation, and doesn't involve any major hardware issues..... "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once."

Nothing will get someone ready for the "real" world like some on-call for a week, sucking the time out of one's life. : ) I am always on-call for my servers, but I do eCommerce, and that does not tolerate downtime. The SETI operational staff is something like 2 or 3 people, and they aren't strictly operations. ... but we also have to realize that 99% uptime isn't a requirement for this. If the servers are down all weekend, there is always Monday -- and those who are worried about running out of work can always run a bigger cache. |

nice to see I'm not the only one who's on-call on the weekends... well, I get in the office on sundays anyway - for a coffee from this little fellow. :-)) mic.

Nothing will get someone ready for the "real" world like some on-call for a week, sucking the time out of one's life. : ) They try......they really do. But you have to understand that Seti never promised 100% uptime, or anything close to it. That's why Boinc has the mechanisms built into it to allow you to have a cache of work on your computer to get it through project downtime, and to allow you to have other projects on tap if your favorite project is having some difficulties. Eric and Matt have often taken care of problems on their own time during weekends, but they cannot be expected to be on tap 24/7.... Nothing will get someone ready for the "real" world like some on-call for a week, sucking the time out of one's life. : ) One of the reasons you can have a work cache is so that you can continue to process work during outages, or select a second (or 3rd or 4th or 5th) project as a backup. I'm sure the person that just came "off call" wasn't doing it for love so if you're happy to provide the funding then i reckon someone could be on standby 24/7 to sort things out. Grant Darwin NT |
