This is where I crunch from.

Pic is taken from the farm that I used to live on, about 10 mins from where I live now.

Ian

Ian that looks like Mt. Shasta from the California side. That is a very good photo. I like the contrast between the deep green of the hills and the white of the snow on the mountain.

Message 798298 - Posted: 15 Aug 2008, 13:02:54 UTC - in response to Message 798251.

Sometimes the most simple things make us stop and think.... and think again.

I just finished having a conversation with my 5 year old niece who dropped in with her grandma. She told me how big the moon looked and that she would have to get her mom to come to my house to see it. I said that her mom would be able to look out the window and see it from her place, my neice turned to look at my house and said my house was too tall and her mum could not see over it to see the big moon. I walked with her to the other side of the house and out onto the street and just quietly pointed up to the moon. She was so happy and couldnt wait to get home to show mom.

Each and every one of us
beneath the one sky
the one moon
all of us

can you also see it... just like me ... from far away

;-)

Im glad to hear that girl have an uncle wise enough to show her
the magic of the moon..

Cheers..from far away.. ;-)

Nice one Ian, I could spend months hiking around that area, does the mountain ever loose the snow cap in mid summer or is there always a bit on top.

The Mt usually gets pretty bare by the end of summer, but there is permanant snow in the crater area, and it can get a random dusting pretty much any time of the year.

There is pretty heavy cover up there right now, and more snow showers, so the rangers are warning people off because of the avalanche risk. Just cold rain here at the house though.

Sitting here by the crunching machine to keep warm :-)

Ian do you know the elevation of that mountain?

You can Search for "Mt Shasta" (suggested in another post) and choose (for example) the Wikipedia entry. There you will see a photo from the same general angle and find the answer to your question along with lots of other interesting background and quotes.

It goes onto my list of "things I want to see next time I go to California".

Michael I know how high Mt Shasta is. I wondered if Ian knew what the elevation of the one he posted is. It has a good resemblance to Mt. Shasta.

8,261ft, not quite as high as My Shasta, but I do see what you mean about the resemblance. What makes Taranaki / Egmont stand out is thats it stands alone on the coast with no other high ground around it.

Dont worry... we have clothing called Swandri here in NZ, it's wollen, warm and waterproof.

But if I go and take pics now I will get mist, rain and cloud.. with a little hail thrown in for good measure. Not exactly exciting photos. ;-)

I thought that was sooooooo familiar. You have taken the photo from the opposite side, away from the DOC entrance. I looked at it and thought it looked a heck of a lot like what I trecked over and then around the top trail, end of 2006. I had one day of severe rain and high wind and managed to get blown right off my feet three times even with the full 20kg pack on my back.

And here was I thiking your photo was somehwere in America... still laughing.

That mountain is the one in the Lord of the Rings movie. They shot about 1/4 of the movie in the countryside around it.

Yes Arizona... your not wrong... ;)

Its actually my sunday afternoon cut and paste session while it was raining so hard outside... I made it from three separate images, The stars background was taken with my camera from the back lawn one night about a fortnight ago, the moon is a view through the telescope. Its a "composite" image.
