I can see that my little exercise in free speech rapidly degenerated into personal attacks. The former thread on this topic, with specific instructions for "light moderation", has been locked. I have not yet decided whether or not to hide it.

I have opened a new thread for you to continue your discussions, if you wish. The normal rules of moderation apply to this thread. If you are a meanie-weenie, your posts will hidden!

Well, "Wilma", you allowed yourself that people can post links to statements by some of the terminated people, giving them an opportunity to post their flamings by proxy, you allowed people to flame other posters, all without any consequences at all, I personally brought a few issues up to you yesterday, which you chose not to react to, so I guess you created this free-for-all thread for flamings and insults yourself. Your "light moderation" failed!

I don't think either 'side' can take the moral high ground. Both 'sides' were flaming and generally insulting the other.

The next question is, what is going to be done to stop this repeating itself?

And no sarcasm and dances of joy etc are needed...

Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope.

These two groups have been at war here for some time and the Cafe has suffered greatly because of it. The fact that much of the war was underground and out of sight to most of us is no excuse. They took it underground because they KNEW it would not stand the light of day.

I personaly take no joy in the termination of their contracts but as I said before. This ballpark belongs to UCB and they set the ground rules. You either abide by the rules or go play ball elsewhere.

Perhaps a 7 day shutdown of all the forums would wake them up and also give the developers time to deal with the much needed problems with the Astropulse rollout.

Hear Hear.
Be it upon our own heads if this thread is moderated.
Now please, please, may we try to conduct ourselves in a mature adult manner and let us not allow this thread to also deteriorate into a sickening display of personal mud slinging and back-stabbing.

Anyone who witnessed the the beginning of this disastrous sequence of events a month ago will know the name of the person on who's head lies the blame.
Myself and others were banned for expressing our anger and disgust at his unconscionable abuse of authority and betrayal of trust which has culminated in the termination of contracts of some members whom I would call friend.
My personal opinion?
I am delighted that the above mentioned person has been axed but for the rest, I would prefer that a lesser punishment be imposed allowing for their return to the community at a future date following the issuance of a final letter of warning.

When the private "Pub" was opened to public viewing I wasn't interested in going there because to me it would be like reading someone's mail or private diary. I was disappointed that many did not have the same attitude as myself.

Once again, please keep this thread calm, sensible and on topic.

Thank you all.

Whiskey.

I must be completely missing something, here's what I've gleaned so far. Feel free to fill in any gaps or misconceptions.
There's a telescope that collects data.
This data is distributed to regular computer users with a program that looks for things.
The project that encompasses this data collection, distribution, and processing has a message board.
On this message board there are people that post things, friendships and cliques form.
Sometimes posts are edited or deleted.
Sometimes the posters whose posts are edited or deleted feel slighted.
Drama ensues.

Does this about sum it up? If so, I feel somebody should point out that you're all behaving like spoiled little children.
I further feel the need to point out that these message boards HAVE NO BEARING ON ANYTHING, ANYWHERE, or ANY ONE.
They will not determine who our next president will be, if we'll go to war, if you'll eat tonight or die tomorrow.
A good deal of posts in this forum are what I would consider to be intelligent. It seems like most people have a job, families, responsibilities and generally get along okay in the real world. With that being the case, what the hell?
Did you all stop taking your prescriptions or is there something in the water?

If any of this is in error, my apologies. I'm pretty new to the whole crunching "scene", and while I was aware that the internet is serious business I didn't realize peoples lives were completely dependent on the search for (and subsequent discussions of) ET.

Happily, I cannot.

Applications need forums to retain existing users and to attract and nurture new ones. Show me a major application that doesn't have a forum. You will be hard pressed to do so, imho.

As for "this madness": having been an active Cafe Seti denizen for 3 years now (where the tire hits the road), I can tell you that the situation has improved continuously. Great strides forward have been made, particularly since Eric became Administrator. In short, there has been steady progress forward to civility and understanding...and there will continue to be such progress.

As a side effect of the overall process, those that will not stop warring with each other are steadily knocking each other, and themselves, out of these forums.

Let's not forget that even this sad business, some 26 fighters were knocked off these boards...in one stroke!

There are no more winners to be found in forum warfare. Those who continue to fight will find themselves losing. I firmly believe that.

Now peace between warring factions does take time. We're doing a lot better than our world leaders...in Ireland, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan and Zimbabwe, to name a few.

So, to everyone in Seti, from our Administrators and Staff to our members:

Congratulations!!!

Well done!!!

Our lives don't depend on the search. It is the scientific aspect and the fun of it. These forums can be quite good fun at times. Obviously things are a little tense right now because of some of the recent issues, but they CAN be and ARE fun. I will agree with you that as far as quite a few people have been acting they are like little children. There is no reason to point fingers at each other and to create enemies. This is why I do this project......
It is of great scientific value and it is fun.
I will admit that some of the recent events here has taken away from the fun and if people don't stop their childish behavior I WILL be leaving this project for others. I am going to give it until the end of next week, and if things aren't any better I'm gone to other projects and other forums. This is just my view of things.

That's not the specific reason I'm leaving. It's played a part in pushing me over the edge, but the specific reason is that this project just doesn't seem as useful as it once did.

Many things have been stated past, and present. Many are upset that "status quo" is upset.

Many have for gotten why we are here, is to Prove or Disprove ET.

I would hope that people that leave Seti is because they have found another project that fits thier needs and finding ET is no longer their goal. Not because a few individuals real or via proxy stand in a circle pointing fingers at each other. What happened was wrong, those at Seti are working to correct that and being more public about it than required. I know of other projects that would have just removed the account(s) said nothing.

Seti is and has always tried to be honest with the users. They have made a lot of progress in communications over the years.

Life is too short for this.

Right now You have a chance to express problems or feelings... Right now You can tell of real problems.

Use it or lose it.

Regards

Pappa

I think the project and the forums are strong enough to weather this storm.....
It would hardly be appropriate to punish every user because of the actions of so very few.

And Maj.....I think you will find most other project's forums a bit boring compared to Seti's. Current difficulties aside, this project's forums have such a large group of active posters who provide humor, friendly chat, and technical help which I have never seen at such a level when I was on other projects.

Don't take this the wrong way Pappa. But whenever that option seems to be presented we get the this is the problem, no it isn't, yes it is, no it isn't....

Followed by suggestions and no that won't work...

Followed by flaming and insults...

And then thread locked or hidden...

And then again in a new thread...

EDIT: Right now the problem is I can't get any work here and Seti is supposed to be the POTM for the team. Got to crunch on MW to tide me over...
