Message 788519 - Posted: 28 Jul 2008, 1:46:04 UTC - in response to Message 788187.

Hi
Ran SETI years ago and it was trouble free, then I come back and it seems that it never works! what is the point of running SETI if it never works? can grind my pc into the ground on one of the other projects on Boinc. Going of on a hike dosn't seem very responsible at a time like this! best these folk put in some work if they expect ideots like us to support their aims. Am I Right?
Andy (u/k)

BOINC is intended to harness a waste product: unused CPU cycles on machines that would otherwise be idle.

Given that it's a waste product then that means that your excess CPU is going to the idle task instead of SETI.

Doesn't seem worth the kind of angst your message represents.

If you're really worried about running out of work, pick another BOINC project or three and give each a low priority compared to SETI.

... and since SETI is currently adding a new kind of search for ET (Astropulse), expect some problems as they're rolling that out. You can't make an Omelette without breaking some eggs.

Some of the best development I've done has taken place more than a half-mile from the nearest computer. "Take a hike" is a valid programming method.

I believe that AstroPulse is not a search for ET, but more for cosmic explosions.

And on an unrelated note, the scheduling servers are down again, not able to report or get new WU's.

It appears that AstroPulse Beta is also down. AstroPulse Beta As I write this it's 7:35pm on Sunday 27/7 in the land of the Seti servers, we might just have to sit tight & wait until morning Seti time so the team can sort the issues. Maybe they can fix it remotely here's hoping.

On a side note AstroPulse Beta_file_deleter.i686 is disable too

Getting the following error message - it appears to be uploading, but not reporting?? Is that what I am seeing or is this an anomaly, also?

The servers are down, my friend.........the trouble is not on your end.

Eric or Matt will put things right in the morning I hope....give it about 12 hours.

ok, thanks. I have about 32 hours of SETI work on this machine to stay busy. If not fixed I will draw on my other projects to take up the slack.

LOL....I was gonna quip that you had the plan, Stan.....

But then I looked and realized your name really WAS Stan.

Hope your cache holds out 'till the servers see dawn.

<grip>Does anybody out there feel like we are part of the beta project even though we thought we were part of the production part of seti? Scarecrow's graphs look horrendous. Hopefully this weekend will be the last hiccup in the transition to AP. But I don't plan to participate in AP until the dust is settled, for sure. </gripe>

Servers are having problems at the moment. No one is getting work until the problem is fixed.

For my part, I just last night at about 2 am found the thread on Gentoo's wiki that told me how to fix my system so that World Community Grid can connect again after upgrading my amd64/linux box.

Now that it is connecting, SETI won't!

Argh!

(Actually it did: at 8:55 it downloaded my master file, but it hasn't been able to upload a result since.)

Anyway, Boinc IS working as it should. It's automatically retrying every few minutes while it's working on a batch for another project. You *are* crunching other projects, aren't you?

The guys at Berkeley are doing all they can on a shoestring budget to do all this and I for one applaud them. (Hrm, where's that donations link...)

Note that a program may show as "running" on the status page, but may not be doin' its' job... as the scheduler quite evidently is not...

Just my luck!!! Farm coming to the end of team's potm & as I'm not attached to their next one for Aug was going to switch whole farm back to Seti to get my tc up to 500k.

Oh well, with the heatwave we're having here, along with the Tuesday outage, it'll give my farm a nice cooling rest.

Back on Wed (fingers crossed).
