It was tested a while ago, but the problem is that it drains the cell-phone's battery within a really short time. Set aside that most projects need more memory than a cell-phone carries, it's not really feasible to do. |

Cell phones go into hibernation whenever the user is not actively using the phone. The processor speed gets cut to as low as the manufacturer believe they can get away with. Some drop to below the CPU speed of the original IBM PC. Like the original IBM PC, they have no Floating Point Processor. All in all, you get to multiply the run times by a factor of at least 1000. Many phones also do not charge if they are in use while they are plugged into a power source as all of the power from the power source is being used to run the phone. This is not a problem for most users as the phone is off most of the time. But BOINC would have to keep the phone on all of the time to get the processor speed up. Experience with a different application where we accidentally left the phone active. Battery life was about 2 hours (think talk time, not stand by time). As you can see, this is not a great use of developer time. BOINC WIKI |
