What's the way to move my BOINC installation
(only s@h is present) from one path to another
path on another drive, all on the same puter?

Is it as easy as pick up the whole thing and plop
it down and change shortcuts to it, or is there
some tweaking of stuff in xmls to go along with it
(which would be fine with me)
or is it harder than that, like deinstall/reinstall,
etc.

Goal is to not perturb HostID, account number, CPID
or anything. I'd like to make this transparent to
the outside world.

I'm assuming you are running Windows. On Linux it is simply a matter of moving the whole directory to the other location and restarting it (changing the shortcuts/paths where necessary). On Windows however, you should set it to "no new work" and run your cache down then uninstall it from where it is, and reinstall it where you want it. BOINC writes info to the Windows registry which makes it impossible to simply move the directory.
(Please note that I don't run BOINC under Windows so someone with more Windows experience may correct me. I run Linux only except for a very limited number of games and other progs that just don't cooperate with Linux or don't have Linux alternatives.)

I've never tried it, but exiting BOINC, making a copy of the directories, uninstall & re-install, copy the backup directory to where the new installtion is, restart BOINC & it should continue on from where it left off.

This works. There is a simpler way as well. Copy the BOINC directory to the new location then uninstall and reinstall to the new location. This way you usually keep the host ID as well as all the in progress tasks.

I've never tried it, but exiting BOINC, making a copy of the directories, uninstall & re-install, copy the backup directory to where the new installtion is, restart BOINC & it should continue on from where it left off.

This works. There is a simpler way as well. Copy the BOINC directory to the new location then uninstall and reinstall to the new location.

In the past i've found it best to do the installation, then copy. Some programmes tend to clobber existing files if you install them after doing a copy.

I've, when I first installed BOINC 5.10.30, in december 2007, put it in the X:\Program Files\BOINC\ etc. DIR and never trouble with this.
Ofcoarse, had to give permission to install and run it.
Keeps me thinking, why is there a difference in 1 particular O.S.
After i read about a 100 off post's, regarding installation off a BOINC manager and maybe an optimized app..
Me, too, had it installed in a X:\BOINC dir, but it didn't change anything.
I use VISTA home Premium 32BIT and BOINC 6.2.12, now (just available, with the message, it's an beta/or test version).
Usually it's inpossible to replace a program(in WINDOWS) because of it's register.Info on installed prog's will be stored heirin.
But just quit BOINC, move the DIR to a new place and start a new install, so you'll have your WU's and can go on BOINC'in.
After about 4 month's BOINC is recognized by the Use Interface off VISTA and don't have to give permission, it starts up after the BOOT sequence.

Under windows, there are two correct orders.

1) Stop BOINC (optional), Uninstall, move, install.
2) STOP BOINC (not optional), move, uninstall, install.

You do not need to run down the queue first.

Thanks to all. The purpose here was because I had
a large drive (E:) mounted on the target machine, but
the target is getting so old, I moved that drive to
another machine on the net to allow for the (old)
target machine to go away someday, thus wanted to move
BOINC back to C: so it could stand alone. Along the
way machine decided to have it's PS die, and in fixing
that, managed to bump the clock speed DIP switch (thus
converting it fromn 233MHz to 133MHz!) So after chasing
down an old enough PS, fix up permissions on net-shared
E: drive on it's new home, etc. etc. here's what seemed to
work:

shutdown
Make copy of existing BOINC from E:
Deinstall BOINC (from E:)
Install BOINC (on C:) (but don't run yet)
delete all files under BOINC on C:
drop the copy of BOINC on it
run.

Odd part was (OT) that where I mounted the E: drive on
another machine would let the old machine access everything,
EXCEPT the BOINC folder, and then same for the locales
folder under that. Could not even open them with explorer.
Had to go into the server and specifically
share those folders for all user net sharing. Every other
folder on that mount was OK just by sharing the drive. Until
then the deinstall croaked and rolled itself back each time.
