it helps but yet it doesnt help. if you have your computer on all the time it keeps it from having power surges when u turn it on and off. but since you are running at 100% it makes the cpu run hotter which will burn transistors out a little bit faster but by the time it makes a big differance your computer is out of date anyway. plus as long as your computer is on it will burn out transitors in the cpu from normal where and tear that is why your computer is slower after a couple months or even years. it is realy only worth turning off your computer (because of the power surges when u turn it on and off) if you use it once a week or less. hope this helps

I have NEVER toasted a cpu......no matter how hard I have driven them......
Several mobos.....yes. But NEVER a cpu......

And why ask, when you are already OCing? You obviously are not looking for the thing to last 10 years otherwise you would not OC.......

So just relax......let the clock speed go where it may......enjoy.

We're talking "binary" here. It only becomes an issue if the 1's and 0's all become 0.5's -- or if a section of the chip quits completely and the processor is just dead.

It won't slow down.

Your machine may die earlier (i.e. in four years instead of six) but that's more than one standard eternity anyway.

You don't have to leave your computer on -- Berkeley (for several reasons) only asks us to crunch when we'd be using our computers anyway, harnessing the waste processor cycles of a machine that will be drawing power anyway.

If you want to run 24/7, you may, but the only machines I have that crunch 24/7 are servers, and they're on anyway.

I leave my computer one maybe 23 hours average a day. I think the most important thing to remember is keeping all the things clean that need to be clean. The processor is a must to keep clean. Any inlet holes must be kept clear of obstructions.

In really hot weather it's a real possibility that you should shut your computer down during the hot day hours, unless you're air-conditioned. It's the heat that kills a computer..... not running BOINC.

I agree with Mark, Yeah I've toasted a motherboard or two also, But a cpu? Never. The motherboard seems to always protect the cpu, I only turn any or all of the PCs off when absolutely necessary, Like when I need to do work on a PC or work on the house, Or for a reason related to My electric bill, But the last is more of a limiting factor for Me as I operate on a fixed income. Right now I could turn off one PC that needs work that I've been putting off, But Tuesday will be good enough now that I'm experiencing a lull in the activity around here, As It's now 109°F/43°C(HOT!, Needles CA is @ 115°F/46°C @ 3:14pm PDT on 6-21-08), Clear, with 5% Humidity outside, Inside It's 83°F/28°C and 56% Humidity inside, two more retrofit windows and It will feel real good in here w/4 Quad overclocked PCs. :)

115 is hot! I have just experienced a high of 109F today, but nothing in the 110's range, ever.
