When I got married, I knew both of my wife's parents died of cancer. For me to continue to smoke would terrify her, I simply stopped. Period. |

Mark, I have finished my last heater, while walking the dog. I threw the empty pack in the garbage. I hope I can stay the course and kick this nasty habit. I know it will be tough, but it is mind over matter. Now off to the shower, and to sleep, knowing that I am a better person for doing this. Mark, you are a better person for doing this also. Thanks for the support in this quest, and stay true to the promise...the promise of a healthier life, a healthier mind, and knowing that you and I are doing the right thing. Keep safe, my friend... I don't smoke. The smokers at my office are restricted to doing so outside on the loading dock. The cigarette smoke is actually more visible and stinks more than the diesel exhaust from the trucks. (Hope this is one more incentive to quit and stay off of them). All 4 of my grandparents and one uncle died of smoking related illnesses. Three in their 60's, one in his 70's, and one after a very long run of emphesema in her 90's after not having smoked for 25 years. All of them were multi pack a day smokers, and all my grandparents would most likely have lived to see their first great grand child if they had not smoked - they all missed it. (hope this helps as well). Hang tough. Take it one day at a time. Like any addiction, you cannot ever have another - not even one. Good luck. BOINC WIKI |

First of all, thank you very much for all of the supportive posts...it helps, believe me... Made it home from work this evening without stopping by the gas station for a pack or two o' gags....none left here. The first thing I noticed when I got home after not having any all day, and not having one in the car on the way home, was the stale smell of cig smoke when I walked in the door...yuk!! With the house closed up and the AC on to cool the crunchers down that stuff just sticks in the air... The second thing I noticed was that when I sat down on the couch to check the daily Seti forum activity and check in on the crunchers, I had the irresistible urge to burn one....found a half left over from this weekend and lit it up...took a couple of drags, made me dizzy...enough of that. Decided to distract myself by cleaning the litter boxes and putting out the garbage...included in the garbage was my prize stash of half smoked ciggy butts...you wouldn't believe how good they start looking when you're jonsin'...gone now. As for Lori, my GF...that's another story...she has been chiding me to quit for years....and for good reason...she was a heavy smoker when she was younger, and actually contracted throat cancer....it was caught fairly early and treated mostly with radiation therapy applied directly down her throat...it has been considered cured for quite a few years now...but she still has side effects from those radiation treatments. Soooooooo...day one....tomorrow is another day. Thanks friends....this is not gonna be easy, but I have my mind made up that I am gonna give it my very best try!!! I hope not to let you or myself down. Best Regards to all, Mark. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Good for you to decide to quit Mark. My mom, after 40+ years of smoking, had no choice but to stop. As some know she went into the hospital and had to be put on a ventalator for 5 days due to how sick she was, all due to the 40+ years of smoking. Now, since October, she has not touched one of those death sticks yet. Unfortunately, it took being hospitalized for her to realize this. I would hate to see this same thing happen to you. Keep strong, you can kick the habit. I'm here to support you the best I can. Your friend, Jeremy |

Keep at it Mark, it will be good in the end and healthy to you and the Kitties. As a non-smoker of xx years, I can only look on and see a story repeat many times. But, I do have an old story of a work colleague from over 30 years ago ... Way back, when I was the night factory manager of an ordnance manufacturing company, we had a foreman who was a confirmed multi-pack smoker (60-80 per day). He went to see his NHS doctor year in and year our, and each time was encouraged to give up. His attitude was when I die I will have enjoyed the cigs, but I will not give up. A few years after he got pains in the groin, from cellular damage due to carbon monoxide damage and loss of oxygen to the cells. Yes, this is a known extreme effect of smoking. Anyway, the doctor said, at the end of the consultation ... I will see you next year, and we will amputate your left leg! This shocked my colleague, who asked why? He was informed the carbon dioxide replacement for the oxygen carried by the red blood would, by then, result in gas gangrene to his toes and lower leg. The only cure was to amputate. My colleague was shocked and gave up on the spot. The reason? He did not mind dying, but he could not stand hopping around for the rest of his life! Kidding aside ... this is a true story! It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

Best advice I can say is buy some nicotine gum, or patches whatever you like.... I liked the gum the best. The minute you start jonsing for a smoke pop that guy in. It takes the edge off & gets your mind off cigs. Stay out of bars, or people that smoke for awhile. Once you quit you can go back, but you're too fragile right now. You'll find that you'll get intense urges to light up.... Do something else for a bit, & you'll find you'll forget about it. One day at a time, & don't give in to the urge, but if you do.... just forget it, & don't view it as a failure. View it as a lesson, & think about what led you to doing that, & try to keep from doing it again. You'll find that you consider smoking as a friend..... Don't be fooled. Cigarettes are a fair weather friend. They'll let you down later on when you need your health. I quit 3 years ago after smoking for 40 years using those methods listed above. But don't think you're ever out of the woods. Even when you quit for that long, you'll still occasionally have the urge. Three months ago, I was particularly drunk, & was visiting a friend that smoked. It looked good, so I stole one, & took three drags. It tasted delicious! Then I thought WTF are you doing? I put it out & haven't had the urge since. Alcohol & cigs always seem to mix. Know this & act accordingly. Good luck Mark! And keep with it! If you have a moment of weakness, don't view it as a failure. Use it as a way to learn what you did that got you to that point. You don't have to give up all that you enjoy.... you just have to put them on hold for a bit. Account frozen... |

Stay out of bars, or people that smoke for awhile. I want to clarify, I didn't mean to stay out of people that smoke... just stay away from 'em. LOL!!!! I quit successfully partially because the doctor told me I've got emphysema. It's quit now, or have to quit later because oxygen tanks & smoking doesn't mix. Off to work!! Fun, fun, fun. Mark, I'm a non-smoker but I know you can do it for the kitties and your long term health. Look at the $$$ you can save up to donate to SETI and/or use to upgrade your PC's sooner. I could not resist but to add a link to This Video. It's just some other reasons to quit. |

Hello again! What I do is compare this issue with the Phoenix Mars Lander mission. Let me explain it: The main mission has been estimated in about 3 months, right? OK. Let´s assume we are the Phoenix Mars Lander and our mission is to give up smoking during that given period of time. I visit every day the mission´s webpage and the first thing I do is having a look at the counter, which tells me exactly the time spent since EDL. Some failures are allowed, like the microvawe oven, where a fuse had gone!! But that´s ok....shit happens. But the main mission is not in danger. Now we need to shake those clumpy peebles and soil samples and make another day´s effort. Cheers! |

OK......I have tried before.......but I am ready to quit......... I'll suport you MS rah rah rah come on MS you can do it MS rah rah rah All together now M S,M S,M S,RAH RAH RAH,RAH RAH RAH!!!! I personaly gave up the Weed a long time ago(1975) PS. don't look forward to being any richer and watch the weight coffin nails(ciggies) suppress the apitite oh and look forward to being able to "taste" your food,AND one other thing I read a few years back that a person who had given up smoking saved the money and after about five years IIRC was able to buy a Porche 911 so it can be done it only needs will power, and only you can say that you have it or not like you posted telling the World(well the part that crunches SETI)is the first step on the road. Old enough to know better(but)still young enough not to care |
