Mark

Despite the cravings, keep true to your resolution.

It will give you more money for more upgraded/new rigs, and affording flexible O/Cing MoBos.

And you will feel better over the following quarter from the point you ceased.

Best of luck

John

I agree here. Save up the money that you would normally spend on smokes and put it towards something else (like your kitties).

I have never smoked. Never even tried one. And will never do so.

Good luck to you Mark. If you want to quit smoking you can do it. You are stronger than you think. And by quiting you may also be improving your kitties health as they don't have the smoke, fumes and smell as well. Perhaps that is a motivation.

After all remember my sig.
Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope.

Message 765247 - Posted: 9 Jun 2008, 11:55:41 UTC - in response to Message 765242.

I gave up in May last year after 40 years of smoking, thats 13 months now. I found at £150 a month I was having trouble affording it, when my part-time hours got cut by half. There were 3 rules that worked for me.

1. You need a valid reason to give up ie money, health, etc
2. You have to genuinely WANT to give up
3. You need to remind yourself of 1 & 2 every day

Best advice I can give is don't go cold turkey, you'll fry your brain. Cut down gradually over a couple of weeks, from 20 a day to 15, then to 10, then to 5, then stop. That way you wean yourself off it. I didn't use patches or gum but if they help then do so.

Announce publicly that are giving up, fear of ridicule if you fail is a powerful enabler. Do something positive with the money you save so you can see a positive benefit from your efforts. I also found it helped to continue to mix with smokers, after a week when your sense of smell and taste start to come back, it's a constant reminder of how you were and never realised it.

It should be easier for people these days to give up, as there is so much legislation against where you can smoke, and it has become very much an anti-social pastime. You will probably find that you drink and eat more to compensate, so do watch the alcohol and weight.

Remind yourself all the time of that valid reason why you stopped, and that you genuinely want to continue, and let people know how you are getting on, so that they can praise and support you.

Best of luck Mark, you CAN do it if you really WANT to!!

Thank you for your comments.....
1......both.....I am tired of paying $6.00/pack for something I throw in the ashtray when I am done with it...and at 51 years of age, it sure ain't helpin' me health......
2......I DO want to quit....have for some time now.....
3......I HAVE announced publicly.....henceforth this thread......and that was exactly my reason for doing so.....
4......I already drink like da fish, so that could not get any worse (weekends only), and I only weight 150 lbs., so I got some leeeway there..........

Chris......this is gonna be a cold turkey thing for me or not at all......you know my struggle.....and thank you again for your thoughts and support.....I only got about 25 years into it, so if you did it, so can I.....me freakin' meow!!!

Wish you luck Mark, Beer has always been my downfall. I quit for a week or so then go out and drink some beer and wake up a smoker again. Guess I will have to give up both. Getting closer, trying Chris's method of slowing down.
