Rice Byproduct Makes Biofuel

A much more useful source of BioFuel. The source is waste that was going to be burned anyway, might as well make use of it when it is burned.

And you think it will all be better next year, right?

This thread is about Biofuels and the economy, not Politics and the economy.

You think the two are really divorced from one another????

Politics is money....money is the economy....energy controls the money....which controls the politicians....which.....well, you know the rest...

It's turtles all the way down, if you know the old joke.....if not, I will post it for you..........

Seven years????
Try 37 years ago.....remember the 70's energy crunch???? (NO, not the disco fad).
If we had stuck with some of the initiatives that were started back then.....we might be in quite a different position than we are today.......

Some more late night musings on the thread postings:

Politics is the "art of the possible". Money being a form of "GREASE" makes the process function--sometimes to the detriment of the majority's interest.

Biofuels came about because of the exploitation by the Farm Lobby of the desire to answer the Oil Supply question. Politicians wanted to help their farming constituents--you might argue that it was their job----possibly greased with healthy contributions to the old "campaign fund".

I was on a State-wide Committee on this question in Illinois about 30 years ago during the Carter Adninistration. I ran the energy budget for the University of Illinois and so got to be on this sort of study group. Investors were being solicited for capital to build alcohol plants. The U of I Foundation was being approached on this question. I owned a farm at the time but it was not a major revenue producer for my brothers and I. Just sort of a hobby -mostly cattle grazing and timber with modest corn production.

We beat down the desire of farming and entrepreneurs' interests at that time . Even though there was fuel rationing in that era, we knew it was a bad idea. Despite the fact that you could feed the lysine-deficient distiller's grain to cattle, it was obvious that meat and food production would suffer. It was a majority consensus that Ethanol Production for motor fuels was not a good use for our feed grains.

Corn was being dumped on the ground back then due to record yields, full elevators, and the lack of rail cars to move the grain. World demand was good but the Asians were still eating their minimalist style of diet. So we couldn't find a place to store the excess corn. The price of corn was not much more than $1.50/bushel. Yields in Champaign County those years sometimes hit 300 bushels/acre and averaged well into the 200's. The farmers worked hard but the over-supply drove down their profits. Abundant yields were sort of a mild curse in this regard.

So, decades later, we are where we are (profundity ?). The ethanol thing has gained traction. What will be the politics of fixing the situation and will it even be possible given the wealthy special interests vs the indigent, hungry and budget-pinched people of the World.

Corn is now around $6.00 per bushel and Texas A&M still publishes an article claiming this has nothing to do with rising food prices--perhaps we should re-visit the Greeks when they ponder "What is Truth"---"What is Justice"

Algae Startups Confront Promise of Miracle Fuel With Big Summer

The fluorescent green mantle of biofuel savior has come to rest upon algae—slimily, sure, but for good reason. Algae grows in fresh water or salt water or sewage, rather than competing with food crops for land or resources. And algae actually sucks out the pollution from coal-fired power plants, with a theoretical yield of oil per acre that's hundreds of times greater than, say, corn.

Food is truth......and there is no justice..........
Texas A&M.....isn't that where some of our politicians hail from?

This present blunder just stinks of money.....not our best interests......politics as usual.........if we could get 'big money' out of the process, and get some folks in there that really care about the rest of us.....

Oh, but I suppose I am just crapping in the wind.....

We should keep the discussion going.

FROM the US GRAINS COUNCIL

Corn is the United States' largest crop, in terms of both volume and value. The states of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota account for more than 50 percent of U.S. corn production. Other major corn-producing states include Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, Ohio and Kentucky.

The United States grew 42 percent of the world's corn in during fiscal year 2006, producing 282.3 million metric tons (11.1 billion bushels). Other major corn producing countries in 2006 included:

China -139.4 million metric tons (5.5 billion bushels)
Brazil - 41.7 million metric tons (1.64 billion bushels)
European Union - 48.3 million metric tons (1.9 billion bushels)
Mexico - 19.5 million metric tons (767 million bushels)
Argentina - 15.8 million metric tons (622 million bushels)
India - 15 million metric tons (590.5 million bushels)

The United States is not only the world's top corn producer, but also the top exporter. On average, about 20 percent of U.S. corn is exported. During fiscal year 2006 (October-September), the United States exported 56 million metric tons (2.2 billion bushels) - accounting for 68 percent of world corn exports. During the same period, other major corn exporters included Argentina (10.7 million metric tons, or 421 million bushels) and China (3.7 million metric tons, or 145 million bushels).

I believe we are now diverting 20% of our corn crop to Ethanol --As much as we export. I think that we are displacing less than 5% of our gasoline usage. This 20% is more than the amount of corn produced by many emerging countries altogether. You can see the strain it puts on the ability to afford food in the poorer countries.

Turn-around is fair play. Oil from other countries is severely ruining the economy HERE, so why not screw theirs up with corn. Pass along the non-savings, while they spend Billions to make man-made beaches that look like palm trees!

Living in Central California, it has always made me sad, how much farm land was converted into housing developments. Just today, my home town was sadly number one with regards to foreclosures.
I hope it is not to late for the bread basket here, since an ethenol factory just started operating here.
Last but not least, can one of you please give us a conversion rate from bushel to kilos, so the rest of us don't have to jump thru the google hoop.

Only problem with that would be.....

They would simply tell China to displace some more of it's inhabitants to make room for more corn fields...then they'd get it cheaper.

Sure.

1 Bushel of corn equals 56 pounds...or 25.4 Kilos

1 Bushel of Wheat or soybeans equals 60 pounds....or 27.2 kilos

Thanks Knightmare.
Now I have to reread a few posts, once you or someone explains the difference between wheat and corn.
Seams to me, that one is volume and the otherone might be weight?
Sorry a bit off post.

Like, am I the only one who has heard of engines that run on compressed air?
Or putting blue lasers in your muffler to turn exhaust into industrial diamonds?
Or generating electricity at sub orbital platforms and microwaving it to receiving stations on Earth? Dudes! Like, I don't even try to stay informed anymore and I know all kinds of cool stuff.

Actually..as far as I know...you are correct uli. Corn is 56 pounds per bushel because of the volume. Wheat and soybeans ( although I'm not sure how it would apply to soybeans ) pack together a little better. Therefore, the weight of a bushel is a bit higher.

Actually...that's an interesting idea.

Or putting blue lasers in your muffler to turn exhaust into industrial diamonds?

Sounds like a bit of a stretch.

Or generating electricity at sub orbital platforms and microwaving it to receiving stations on Earth?

Again....sounds like a stretch.

I few moths ago noticed the same silliness with the "Bushel" When i looked up the definition. Ii always thought it was simply 56 quarts in volume. The story of how it got that way would also be interesting --But that's excess info for this thread.

But it seems that each grain has somewhat widely varying weights per bushel. The different grains have different density, The elevators deduct for light weight, too much moisture, non grain material and dirt.
