In a bit of hilarity, I ordered a bunch of stuff on-line from the LSE yesterday. A big bunch of logowear and giftware for people back home and whatnot.

I laughed like hell when I noticed it was cheaper to ship the whole lot back to the U.S., than it was to pay VAT and local shipping. The fuel here is so expensive, combined with the insane tax rates, that it was CHEAPER for me to send it, with a tracking number, 4000 miles away.

Needless to say, I shipped everything back to the U.S., AND avoided the tax entirely, AND saved money.

I figure as much, and I sure hope so.

When I go home, I always offer to pick up little things for my friends, like memory for their computers, MP3 players or whatnot. They save an enormous amount of money not buying that stuff here and avoiding the tax completely.

Remove the obvious...

The fault lies with our greedy Treasury, and the assumption by our current leaders that tax has no natural upper limit to it's price, unlike the price of traded products.

Mind you, it also is a reflection of the British psyche that we allow the situation to arise.

But, I think there have been a number of protest messages to the Government, over the last 5 years, that suggests the Tax burden is getting to it's maximum limit (unless you work in the Public Sector or do not pay tax because income is so low or tax free).

Gas/Petrol prices are not budging...

Reserve Bank of New Zealand declared its economic predictions for the next few months... which resulted in the NZ Dollar to slump against the Greenback by 1.5 cents... and even though Crude is ~US$122... down from a peak of US$135ish... the greedy gas companies ova' here continue to hoard NZ$2.01/litre....

I use my pickup thoroughly, hauling things around the farm, and the oilfield. I practically live in it. I haven't bothered checking to see how many miles between fill-ups, but I routinely get 16 to 18 mpg of Diesel.

Some Nostalgia may ease the pain--or make it worse. When I was just graduated from High school--waiting to go into College i worked at a gas station in Charleston, South Carolina. Regular was 24.9 cents per Gallon and Premium was 26.9.

We sold Kerosine as well for 19 cents per gallon. Truckers would try to buy the Kerosine since it didn't have any motor fuel tax on it (kerosine worked fine in a Diesel Engine).

One day a guy comes in and fills up his brand new Buick Invicta convertible with Premium. The bill was $6.36. I was laughing inside at the tremendous cost of this fill-up and thought how foolish it was to have an auto that was so costly to fill up.

I remember about 7 years earlier than that when I drove down with my mother to Florida (1950). Gas was 19.9 cents per gallon at that time. However, there was a gas war going on all through Georgia and the advertised price on the highway billboards was 13.9 cents.

My first new car after college was a 1966 Pontiac GTO. Gas in 1968 -1969 was still only 29.9 cents. as late as 1978 i could run my used Datsun 510 for 1 cent per mile fuel cost.

My point is that if you are investing for your future retirement, be sure to to figure on an order of magnitude of today's costs for everything if retirement is is 40 years down the road.

That suggests, if you can afford it, to look to something like a a Tesla electric car able to do 220 miles per charge @ 2 cents per mile.. Just think of the improved range as battery technology improves!
