Message 760475 - Posted: 30 May 2008, 2:57:08 UTC - in response to Message 760372.

(Example: Why do I have to select a tab to close a tab? Yes, I know I can right-click, but it still takes two clicks.)

I don't know. I don't use IE (nor do I really consider that part of "Windows", despite what Microsoft says). I can close any tab in Firefox just by clicking on the red X on the tab.

If your mouse has a roller scroll wheel, click the tab with the wheel. That will close the tab.

Been using that trick for a while now too. I can also open a new Home Page tab by clicking the scroll wheel on the "Home" icon in Firefox too.

Also known as a double-click, provided that's the way your mouse buttons are programmed...

Not very 'intuitive', but I'll have to give it a try next time I boot into Vista... ;)

(Got a trick for sending me to the next 'unread' tab, rather than sending me to the previous 'I've already read that one' tab?)

a single scroll wheel click closes tabs.... no double-click involved. Ctrl+click opens link in a new tab. :)

It's actually not the same as a double-click. You're thinking of a third mouse button found one some older mice. The scroll wheel, while it can act as a button too, is different in functionality than the third mouse button from older mice.

I don't know about intuitive, but it sure is handy.

Knew of this one too and I use it all the time. Extremely handy for those who are on the web reading multiple web sites and forum posts that link to helpful information without losing your spot on the current page.

Have you tried openSuSE?

Is that the same as SuSE? If so, yes.

No. SuSE was bought out by Novell, it is now Novell Enterprise Linux. The free version (of Novell Enterprise Linux) is openSuSE.

Well, you've just answered my next question... But 'focus' throughout vista still drives me completely nuts...

If I open a window (such as control panel), why do I have to click in that same window to activate it and my scroll wheel? ;)

That's an odd observation. Every window I bring up is automatically selected so I can start scrolling in it right away. The only time I have to "activate" the window is if I actively clicked outside the window on another object.

I just checked my saved Linux distros on my file server, it is actually openSuSE that I have and not SuSE. So yes, I've tried that.

That's an odd observation. Every window I bring up is automatically selected so I can start scrolling in it right away.

Click on the start menu --> click on computer --> click on control panel in the tree view on the left --> then without clicking, try to scroll the control panel... The focus is still on the left side even though there is nothing over there to scroll... My only real option of attaining the focus is to grab the scroll bar because the window is so tightly filled with icons... Or, I can click on one of the view options even though I'm already in the view I want to be in... Either way, I still have an extra click... Maybe it's just a vista on a macintosh thing, but to me, this simply doesn't make any sense... ;)

I just did as you instructed and it scrolls just fine for me. Of course I don't have a "control panel" in Computer (formerly My Computer for those following along), and I don't have a whole lot of drives in my Computer, so I had to open my hard drive, open a folder that has a lot of files so I could get a scroll bar, then I clicked on the left side (the Favorites link) but I could still scroll in the window on the right.

Maybe it is a Vista-on-a-Mac thing. I don't know for sure though but it works fine on all three of my Vista machines I have here.

I think you're right... I've always used windows in the workplace, and I don't recall ever having focus or text selection issues before... So I kinda figured it had more to do with apple drivers and less to do with vista... ;)
