"Synthetic" humans like Bishop and Ash from the Alien films / or Data from Star Trek Next Generation - remarkable concepts, that are sure to (one day) see the light of day. I'm hoping to see some major AI advances in my life time - I would gladly befriend an android! now, the question is: how long's the wait? that would have worked if you hadn't stopped me |

just look at how fast micro processor technology is evolving, they double power in every 2 years(more or less)...about. Robots are already playing football and navigating in rough terrain(by them selves) Scorpions - Wind Of Change |

I would like also to see it. But you should be aware that its a big risk in it. Called logical bombs. If the AI is able to learn there is allways a risk that the programming is running oposite. But i think for sure we will see such things. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

I've met synthetic people. True story. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |

I wouldn't donate to that homeless cylon. I know he's just going to turn around and blow it all in that meat market behind him. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |

"Synthetic" humans like Bishop and Ash from the Alien films / or Data from Star Trek Next Generation - remarkable concepts, that are sure to (one day) see the light of day. I'm hoping to see some major AI advances in my life time - I would gladly befriend an android! How long to wait? Probably another 200 years for a brain that is as complex as an ants and another 300 years more until we can create a rough assemblance of an animal that does not require piles of wires sticking out of it's back. If we want a life size doll that can not fall over we can have it today. We can even have a human looking machine that (slowwlllyyyy) avoids objects in a room... Linguistically responsive applications have been around since DOS (EG: Alice.) Neural nets that dream have been around for 20+ years. (The first I saw was 100 neurons <analog transistor based> in the 1980s. Neural nets today?... Potentially... but are less likely... as the modern value is to digitise everything (in otherwords using 1000 transistors to emulate one single old analog transistor.. EG: using OOPICs..) which requires far more levels of application. What do people mean by "AI"? * A computer that can speak back to them in natural language and can store information and prioritise it relative to new discourse? * A box that chat's back to us and makes us believe it is a two way process? * A consructed mind that eventually makes up it's own and becomes more than the sum of it's parts? What do people actually mean by an "Android"? * A human looking slave / robot? (With complexity up to the point we like?) * A being created by humans that becomes independant? * A simulation of something we are comfortable with? I have a toy Pino robot. It's quite pretty. It sings and dances and is rather annoying after a while. I also have a 'Robosapien 1' but my Robosapien has a broken right hand so he can't throw his toy bucket. He get's really grumpy :o( They are both under 14-ish inches tall and look like humans (sort of) and can do a few human things (walk, wobble, make noises.. blah blah..) but they are both annoying after a while. Neither do what I want them to do. Neither are simple robots in the "slave" sense ("simple tell and do") as they are interactive. They are pretend symbiotic. Their tiny tiny tiny brains can only cope with only reacting / remembering a few stimuli. (Less than a single cell organism I imagine.) (They are robots with someone elses agenda programmed in. They seem ever so slightly inteligent as I have not yet worked out the complexity of their programmed tree / map.) They are a little fuzzy but only in their primative (less than a tomatoe) type response to the external world. (Noise left.. Noise right... Oops I bumped my foot...) But they can not create new modes of behaiviour or learn beyond their basic programming. I'd be interested in any new developments that have occurred in AI. Beyond complex controlled mechanical systems I am unsure whether we have scratched the surface of simulating a humonoid or even animal physique. (Even simple plants can negotiate a set of stairs.) Current battery technology (broadly available) is too poor and inefficient to power any humanoid style machine for any thing more than a couple of hours. (Relative to bulk, weight etc..) Electric motors are very efficient but are only as efficient as the framework that holds them and non of this can self repair. Organic tissues are probably the most efficient translators and users of consumed energy but it is currently questioned whether we can ethically grow / clone complex tissue of animals / humans for experimentation. I think we are a thousand miles off ever creating a worthy AI or an android. The only examples close to this that I have seen have either been AI or robotic simulations in the media (for movies etc) or in the labs of wealthy companies as projects run by their techs and generally were used as publicity stunts to promote the company. Most android type 'things' (humanoid or otherwise) continue to be toys. Most AI tends to either focus upon accademic and specific issues or go down the line of fuzzy logic or use "natural language" simulations with some open (free form) databasing attached. I am sure I will see thousands of new and exciting developments in the rest of my life-time. I doubt I will ever see a true AI or Android. Sorry.. eek.. Have I painted a dismal picture for the 'love bot' generation? :o))~ ====== A quiz for those who like electronics: Which was developed first? *Transistors . or *Valves (Tubes..) ? |
