Hi Boincers, I'm a longtime Boincer (Seti & FA@H), but Linux-newbie. I'd like to run BOINC as a screensaver under Linux, as I did under Windows. I did set up an Ubuntu (Gutsy) and one Fedora 8 Computer both with Gnome environment. I managed to install BOINC, connect and make it run by autostart. But now it runs all the time from logging on to the system. There is no possibility to choose BOINC in the screensaver menu. I want to run it only when I'm inactive (computer is in idle) and see the dizzy animations. ;) Can anybody help? Thanks a lot! Nightkin |

It's not posible with the actual BOINC version to use it as screensaver. So far I know, is it planed for future releases. |

OK, I have the same issue. I don't care about the screensaver, but I only want it to run when the computer is idle. All the settings say that, but it still runs all the time. I end up shutting it down when I'm using my computer, and half the time forget to start it back up again. Am I missing something, or is it incapable of running this way? I'm on Linux. Tim |

Idle by definition is keyboard usage. Some distributions of Linux, including Fedora, do not work well with this feature of BOINC. I have the same complaint about 5.10.x, so if anyone finds a solution, I'll upgrade from 5.8.16. |

I have just managed to fix that particular problem. Open a Terminal window and type xhost +local: that worked for me under Fedora 9 |

in debian Etch under the boinc client it lists a command --allow_remote_gui_rpc under --help but i do not know what the correct value is. If it is enabled, BOINC managers from other systems could connect to this BOINC client and manage the BOINC client, if the password is correct. |

in debian Etch under the boinc client it lists a command --allow_remote_gui_rpc under --help but i do not know what the correct value is. BOINC managers from other systems can always connect to any client, given that the gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg files are set up correctly. With --allow_remote_gui_rpc you allow the connection without password protection and host name check, as far as I know (which isn't that far :-). Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. in debian Etch under the boinc client it lists a command --allow_remote_gui_rpc under --help but i do not know what the correct value is. this is the error message i found in the output file going back to seti. Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified freeglut (screensaver): failed to open display ':0.0' Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified freeglut (screensaver): failed to open display ':0.0' Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified freeglut (screensaver): failed to open display ':0.0' I am not sure what this means. it appears to me that the client is trying to start the graphics but does not know how to connect to the x server. any one have any ideas or help for this problem? |

Hi! Do you know if is possible to run the windows version with wine? You do not want to do that because wine takes up extra processor time translating all the code. It would be really inefficient. |
