I am very pleased indeed to report that I have now lost 669 posts. Shame I was forced to moan about it before they went but there you go. Tell you what John, we'll have a side wager on this. Whoever has the least posts left at the end of the week buys the beer. At your rate you're buying he he! Yes! I will soon be catching down to you, and I stamp says I now have 9,014 left. Looks like I will need to get the moths out of my wallet! It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues ![]() ![]() |

If the project needs a professional Systems Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Data Base Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Physical Data Base Administrator, get one. Sorry for the late quote...however Beets, the project can't afford a Professional Data Base Administrator. It all comes down to resources. ![]() ![]() |

If the project needs a professional Systems Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Data Base Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Physical Data Base Administrator, get one. yep - iT does at that - so since we've been doing our best on the Donation front ? What would iT take $$ wise to get a 'Professional Data Base Administrator' working @ Berkeley . . . ![]() Science Status Page . . . |

If the project needs a professional Systems Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Data Base Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Physical Data Base Administrator, get one. What?! With all the resources and experts that UC Berkeley has, no such person could be found? Comeon! There must be more to it than mere money involved. (imho) |

Richard is correct, Beets. Any new person has to be paid out of Seti's budget. It's another issue of how to offer the support the project needs. ![]() ![]() |

If the project needs a professional Systems Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Data Base Administrator, get one. If the project needs a professional Physical Data Base Administrator, get one. You raise an interesting point there, Richard. :]] If there were a commitment from Dr. David Anderson to use the donations during a certain timeframe (say, for one given month) for just that purpose, it might well be a big selling point for more donations. |

Richard is correct, Beets. Any new person has to be paid out of Seti's budget. Um, I may be wrong Blurf, but I think Richard was asking for a rough estimate of what it would cost to put the database in order. But don't let me put words in your mouth, Richard. If I'm wrong, just say so. :]] P.S. Nice to see you back on the forums, Blurf! I hope you'll be feeling Tip-Top soon. :]] |

Are there any last year Computer science students studying to be a Data Base Administrator at Berkeley who would be willing to help? I seem to remember reading in some thread in the past where some of the Students there helped in the Lab.? ![]() I Desire Peace and Justice, Jim Scott (Mod-Ret.) |

Playing Devils Advocate as I have no idea how the funding currently balances over the year... What about Months where they don't raise enough donations to pay the bandwidth bills / staff salaries? Do they just pull the plug because of the spending gap that month? The donations pot has to be just that, IMO. A "pot" that can be drawn upon as and when the need arises. If something breaks it has to be fixed straight away, not next month when the budget allows. Another suggestion that hasn't been mentioned yet...Why not let someone else manage the forum side of things here? Take the onus off SETI to maintain a forum, but let SETI Administer it and keep control. Web hosting isn't particularly expensive nowadays and a Forum of this size would be quiet manageable as a seperate entity and would stop hogging SETIs resources. |

You should be careful. People pay good money to exterminate bugs. Yes, I know... But lucky for me, most people are too incompetent to get the job done... ;) ![]() |

Well it wasn't easy but after standing on my head and waving my feet in his face I was able to get Eric's attention for long enough to get a brief answer. It seems they wrote a script that was supposed to quickly go back and purge some old content from the database. Unfortunately the "quickly" part didn't work out (deleting is one of the slowest database operations) so it has turned out to be a slow (days instead of hours) process that I believe is still ongoing. This purge is affecting post counts because of an apparent bug in the BOINC forum code. Go figure. Guess we'll just have to rebuild our post count (yes, I lost a few as well) with an extra round of TLPTPW! Also, a round of PGGBs on me for your troubles! ![]() ![]() A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |
