25 April 1953. Structure of DNA published in Nature.

Im more puzzled THiS is such a long time ago.. ;-) We should have been totally sorted out by now..

Yes, 22 years and still there are quite a few (hundred) off that type off Nuclear Reactors.
Big problem is, how to dismantle these, without everyone involved getting poisened by radiation.

Didn't know too, it was THAT long ago, i was just 1,5 years, on this earth, ;)since the Desoxyribose Nucleic Acid, was discovered. It took that long, because it had to be 'proofed' and explained.
I think, it was one off the most important discoveries made.

In Context
The Ranger rockets marked a new phase in space exploration and were a significant part of America's attempt to be the first to put a man on the Moon.
The first six Rangers failed, some of them missing the moon entirely.

Finally, on 31 July 1964, Ranger VII sent back more than 4,000 images before crashing into the Moon's Mare Cognitum (Known Sea).

The closest images, taken only seconds before impact, showed features as small as a few feet across.

Ranger VIII repeated the feat in February 1965, while Ranger IX brought a successful end to the programme in March 1965.

Altogether, these three Rangers gave scientists a new understanding of the lunar surface and helped pave the way for the Apollo astronauts.

1947 - Thor Heyerdahl and five crew mates set out from Peru on the Kon-Tiki to prove that Peruvian natives could have settled Polynesia.

"The Kon-Tiki expedition was funded by private loans, along with donations of equipment from the US Army. Heyerdahl and a small team went to Peru, where, with the help of dockyard facilities provided by the Peruvian authorities, they constructed the raft out of balsa logs and other native materials in an indigenous style as recorded in illustrations by Spanish conquistadores. The trip began on April 28, 1947. Heyerdahl and five companions sailed the raft for 101 days over 4,300 miles across the Pacific Ocean before smashing into a reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947. The crew made successful landfall and all returned safely."

Today; May 6.

1527 - Spanish and German troops sack Rome; some consider this the end of the Renaissance. 147 Swiss Guards, including their commander, died fighting the forces of Charles V during the Sack of Rome in order to allow Pope Clement VII to escape into Castel Sant'Angelo.

1910 - George V becomes King of the United Kingdom upon the death of his father, Edward VII.

1988 - An airplane going from Namsos to Brønnøysund in Norway crashes into the side of the Torghatten mountain, killing all 36 passengers and crew.

Born;
1574 - Pope Innocent X (d. 1655)
1856 - Sigmund Freud, Austrian psychiatrist (d. 1939)

I just posted this in my coconut-thread ;-) ..but then
i thought this may be a nice topic in itself.

A thread to tell about interesting historical
happenigs for every date the whole year ;-)

I hope you will post it here if you find anything.
And if you can come up with a sentence to tell "what we might
learn of it" , funny or wise, that would be really good!

--------

Todays date;

"On April 11,1970 the Apollo 13 spacecraft left the safety of Earth and began a seven-day ordeal that tested human ingenuity and spirit. Two days into the doomed mission (identified by the unlucky number 13) an explosion in their oxygen tank imperiled the crew forcing them to not only abandon the prospect of landing on the Moon, but also to battle extreme cold, deadly levels of carbon dioxide and more. Although it was one of the riskiest landings ever attempted in the space program, all the men survived in part due to the bravery of Commander Jim Lovell, who wrote about his experiences in the memoir "Lost Moon" which later became the film, Apollo 13."

Even if you can't land on it, nothing says you can't shoot for the moon!

;-)

I have watched it ( the movie ) many times and never tire of it.
Guts determination and an attitude by both the commander and the ground crew
This will be our finest hour.

And by the way I watched it unfold as it happened as a Kid.
