I know there has been a problem over at LHC@home that caused some issues with BOINC, but their home page still says it's down for maintenance, but I've still been getting the odd wu or two. Does anybody know what their problem is? Live long and BOINC! Paul (S@H1 8888) And proud of it! |

I haven't seen or heard anything official, but I posted this in the Science (Non-SETI) Forum the other day. Could be that once again a Lawyer has screwed the pooch. :) |

Does anybody know what their problem is? I have been getting the work too, it reports also, but, they are not outputting stats or doing anything active that I can tell. Because none of the LHC guys have said anything on any of the other project's forums that I have seen it is hard to guess. But, the legal action may, as part of the initial restraining orders, shut down the site for interaction. |

Ahh, thanks for that. This link is still active though.... |

I had wondered if they started updating their boinc server software to a non-archaic version and ran into trouble... but that seems pretty unlikely at this point. They would have at least put up a static index.html page to indicate what was going on. But the fact that work is being generated is rather odd. If the server software were broken then the scheduler would probably not be working... if it is legal action you would think that any court order would include submission of new work... Well, the scheduler's working - I keep getting replies from scheduler version 505 - sometimes it gives out work - and it accepts work back in. My credit has gone up by ~800 since the last stats dump, so the back end is working at least as far as the validation stage. Could it be that they've finished the maintenance (though sadly not an upgrade), and simply forgotten to take the redirect off the front page? (Or is it another social experiment on the crunching community, so see how long we go on crunching for a project with no feedback.....?) |

These pages from QMUL and GridPP give some contact details for the people running the project: http://www.qmul.ac.uk/news/newsrelease.php?news_id=742 http://www.ph.qmul.ac.uk/person.php?initials=N&surname=O%Neill&header=no http://www.ph.qmul.ac.uk/person.php?initials=R.A&surname=Owen&header=no I have not contacted any of them yet, but if the site is not back today, I may do so. I emailed Neasan 2 days ago, not had a reply yet. I just received 2 1,000,000 turn WU's this morning so the project is still sending out work. Is any other BOINC project running and sending out work without a working website? |

I think the project project is down due to the law suite filed against them More info here http://www.lhcdefense.org/ http://timmygadget.blogspot.com/ http://www.mikesbawx.org/~timmygadget/ |

I think the project project is down due to the law suite filed against them ... I don't think so. It is only the BOINC project LHC@home website which is down. The main CERN LHC site is up here http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/ Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008 |

I think the project project is down due to the law suite filed against them ... Well somethings wrong and they are not answering emails at the moment, the law suite was filed a few weeks ago on the 26th March I believe. Some scientists are worried that the Hawking theory is not proven and the small black holes that are created might not evaporate http://www.exitmundi.nl/blackholes_lab.htm Scary thought that we could be sucked into oblivion by the LHC project, but personally I dont think it would happen :-) http://timmygadget.blogspot.com/ http://www.mikesbawx.org/~timmygadget/ |

[...] Far more powerful events occur regularly in our atmosphere from high energy cosmic ray hits and the subsequent air shower of particles. We have various detectors watching those also. (Oooops! Is that one of the arguments for not bothering with the LHC because those events already happen in Nature?) I posted this over at Einstein a while ago... reading legal stuff makes me break out in hives, so I'll leave it to you intrepid few to decipher it all..... From the Complaint/Restraining Order against CERN et al...
The entire complaint/restraining order in *.doc format is here: COMPLAINT FOR TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER, PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION, AND PERMANENT INJUNCTION |

Well, in sum, operating LHC is going to create a black hole and we will all fall in, or 'strange" matter will be created and we will all turn into strange matter. This is somewhat akin to the theories about what would happen to the earth's atmosphere when the first nuclear weapon was detonated. Sadly, the people that came up with this want rejection authority over the operation of LHC and got a judge to agree to it. I suppose we should also stop looking for ET cause if we found him he might want to move in next door and what would the neighbor's think ... and they will destroy property values ... |

I personally suspect that the line "restraining defendants from operating the LHC or further preparing the LHC for operation for four months" is the reason behind the extended "Down for Maintenance" status of the @home project. |

Everyone a long time ago believed the world was flat too and if we went too far we would fall over the edge, though I must admit getting sucked into a black hole and being squished into a sphere with a 9mm diameter seems even scarier, not that we would know much about it if it ever happened. http://timmygadget.blogspot.com/ http://www.mikesbawx.org/~timmygadget/ |

There were some folks who thought that the first explosion of the Atomic bomb would cause a change reaction thru out the entire world. There were some folks who thought the world was flat. There were some folks who thought the earth was the center of the universe (and some still do). Two days ago or so I had some LHC units that finished and were uploaded to the LHC project. I believe the project have some computer problems. http://boinc.mundayweb.com/teamStats.php?userID=14824 |

There is a very large spread/article, on LHC, in this months “National Geographic†magazine. Some really good pictures. I don’t know much about the Boinc LHC. You may know some magnets went bang recently at the project! Something about a metal hairpin flying off a female scientists head as they powered up for a test…I think. |
