The safety of American citizens comes WAAAAY before the "rights" of enemy combatants captured on the field of battle. LAF... another great instance of you "defending" yourself, huh? BTW, if you don't know who the next President is going to be, then you need a history lesson as well as some common sense. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

the land of free.. blah blah belongs to native indians and you are tresspassing Noting the success of Indian gaming By Ernest Stevens Jr. - Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association. April 22, 2008 This week, thousands of tribal citizens from around the country are visiting San Diego to celebrate one of America's great economic success stories: Indian gaming. Tribal leaders, local community leaders and gaming business innovators are gathering here for the National Indian Gaming Association's annual trade show and membership meeting. These leaders represent generations of native people: generations that have seen difficult times and a current generation poised to use its recent success to overcome the difficulties of the past. Throughout Indian country, there are many tribal citizens like me – raised by parents or grandparents with few educational opportunities and virtually no economic resources. Consider this – in the 1960s, my father was one of the founding members of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development. There were just a handful of native-owned businesses back then. None were a Fortune 500 company, and none were an economic powerhouse. A small group of determined Indian leaders recognized Indian country's entrepreneurial spirit, promise and hope and those first small steps stretched into huge economic leaps in the ensuing years. Today, the organization I am proud to chair, the National Indian Gaming Association, represents a strong economic force. In fact, our recent analysis of the economic impact of Indian gaming in 2007 tells an exciting story of growth and promise. Last year alone, Indian gaming generated more than $27 billion in gross revenues and provided more than 700,000 jobs nationwide to both Indian and non-Indian people. In California, total casino-generated revenue from Indian gaming reached $7.7 billion in 2006, according to the National Indian Gaming Commission. And Indian gaming employs 56,000 people within the state, 90 percent of whom are not tribal citizens. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in Palm Springs recently sold $230 million in private placement bonds to 20 institutional investors across the United States, which will fund construction of a new luxury hotel. And here in San Diego, Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation of California recently opened the doors to The US Grant Hotel. After investing $56 million into the renovation project, the Sycuan turned the historic landmark into a five-star hotel. America's corporate culture is also changing with the growth of Indian gaming. Wall Street once knew nothing about tribal sovereignty or reservation economies, but they are now our business partners. For example, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has a strategic alliance with MGM Mirage to develop a $700 million destination hotel/casino resort adjacent to Foxwoods. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Comerica, Bally's, Harrah's, Coca-Cola, IBM are here in San Diego this week to showcase new developments in tribal financing, resort development and other economic opportunities. These are just a few examples of corporate involvement with our reservation economies. But when I measure change, I am perhaps most proud of what has happened to the kinds of businesses tribal leaders worked to promote more than 40 years ago. Today there are more small businesses owned and operated by American Indians than ever before. Last June, the U.S. Census Bureau found that 201,387 small businesses owned and operated by American Indians grossed nearly $27 billion – that is in addition to tribal government enterprises. Did our parents and grandparents dream this could ever be possible? I measure my life by the achievements of our parents and grandparents, and I am ever mindful to look at what my own family did with little means. The comparison continually inspires me and so many other throughout Indian country to do more and strive higher. As the economic impact of Indian country expands in California, and across the country, we must not forget the generations that have come before us, the tribes that still struggle, and the generations that will bring us to new heights. Our success is built on the cornerstone of our predecessors' sacrifices and achievements. We must continue to walk in the path forged by our elders, imagine the impossible, and make those dreams a reality. me@rescam.org |

Do I really strike you as the type of person who feels guilt over actions that took place well before I was born? As an upfront I have read this entire thread and it has been interesting how the topic has changed. With that in mind I have to agree with you on your opinion. You may have expressed it a bit more stongly than I would as to the Iraq war. Whatever the reasons (legitmate or otherwise) if you are going to do something then do it and finish it. If the media and liberal democrates had spent more time talking and showing what "good" was being done rather than looking for ever little thing that was "wrong" in their opinion and stopped giving the terrorists incinatives maybe this would have already been over with. Give me the facts, tell me both sides of the story and let me decide what I think is right or wrong. I'm tired of the constant adversarial point being shoved down my throat all the time. (just like political correctness run amok) And to the "guilt over actions statement", not only that but before my immigrant ancestors came to this country for a better life for them and their off spring. Both peoples had wrongs done to them. As a country we have admitted it and have tried to change, but I don't owe anyone an apology or retribution for something that neither I nor my ancestors had any part of. [edit] And as to the little green men ..... I beleive they've been here and are smarter than we are. They already know that if they show themselves some fool human with a gun will shoot first and say hello later.[/edit] ![]() ![]() |

BTW: in my opinion, "ENEMY" is a product of propaganda. A country once been your ally can suddenly be your enemy just because your government sez so. Your neighbor can become your enemy because your media sez so. Sheer propaganda. Does anyone else see the irony of Thorin noting that things aren't true because someone "sez so?" Ah, credibility folks. Makes the world go 'round. Cordially, Rush elrushbo2@theobviousgmail.com Remove the obvious... ![]() ![]() |

Oh dear me, sorry folks, can't let this one go. Love me, hate me, I don't care .... Can you show how my little buddy lacks credibility? I'd love to read that. Please don't start calling Rush 'Gilligan'. I don't think he owns a hat like that. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data!
