I got lost in this maze once and got sun burnt & dehydrated before I got out!

Gardener Jules Curtis finishes giving the yew tree maze at Longleat in Wiltshire its spring cut. It takes a team of six gardeners one month to clip the 1.7 mile (2.7 km) maze, which first opened in 1976. Picture: bnps.co.uk

OOOH! Grand!!!

I'm a great admirer of the British tradition of building hedge and tree mazes. No one compares with you in that, I think. :]]

Here's one of my favorites, the hedge maze at Hampton Court.

Perhaps you could explain the reason the admirals of britain were so heralded for the british constitution, of course, the spanish french and Dutch controlled the americas, but, what pratronage and nobility will be acknowledged to the next frontier pioneers?

Hey that isn't minotaurs is it?

My guess is that it has to do with the peculiar nature of Britain being in the form of islands. Therefore the navy was always the major arm of the military. The British never lost to any aggressors that its navy could keep from landing. When the enemy did land though (e.g. the Romans, the Normans), the enemy usually won.

I don't really know of course, that's just my guess. :]]

Thr Royal Navy is the senior service here.

All the winning invaders mentioned attacked before the UK had a formal Navy, started by Henry VIII.

No invaders got in once we had a Navy, and a career Army.

Going to buck the trend today and post "Englands big picture" - from Germany. I had no idea this "Shuttle" existed!

The "Buran" shuttle travels on the Rhine, near Sankt Goar, Germany. The old Soviet orbiter, which resembles the US shuttles, will become a new attraction of the technology museum in Speyer. The Buran programme made only one, unmanned flight before it was cancelled.

If I remember correctly, the Antonov 225 was built to carry Buran, hence its twin tails. Even today, its a huge plane and like Buran, there is just the one.

Sixty pig sculptures arrive in Bath as part of an art project called King Bladud's Pigs. One hundred of the animals will be spread across the city to raise awareness of King Bladud who legend says founded Bath after discovering the healing powers of its hot springs while walking with his swine.

At only 16ins tall, Bunting the two-day-old scewbald miniature Shetland pony obviously thinks it is a very big world out there and decides not to venture too far from her mum, Jasmine.
