Can someone explain to me how that can happen?

GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4400 @ 2.00GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 13]
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00)
Have 79 tasks dones in the past 30 days.

GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6]
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00)
Have 28 tasks !!! done in the past 30 days!

Both computers are always turned on with BOINC always running on it and they are both more than a month old...
Internet is always connected...

The only thing I suspect is that because my 3 GHz cpu is running hotter, it's slowing down? would it make sense? Since it's always 100% load because of BOINC and it's at 98 degrees Celcius...
If someone can help me understand why my 3 GHz computer is like 3 times SLOWER than my 2 GHz one...
Please!

There are several possible problems with counting.

1) Not all WUs are created equal. Some take much longer to process than others (factor of 10).
2) Tasks are removed from the web shortly after they are verified. Counting tasks on the web is a pointless exercise.
3) Different computers have different other loads. A computer that is busy doing other CPU intensive tasks will run fewer tasks than an otherwise identical computer that is lightly loaded.

If you use requested credit + granted credit for each computer and there is still a major difference, the following could be true:

4) There could be an overheating issue. Have you blown the dust bunnies out of the computers? Are you certain the cooling is good enough.
5) There could be viruses on the computer.

I am certain that I have missed something.

If that 98C is you CPU core temp..SHUT IT DOWN. That chip has a top limit of 72C. I'm running a 3Gig E8400 oc'd to 4.1Gig and with SETI running both cores at %100 my core temp is only 66c. It has also settled at an average of 1.5hrs per work unit. I havent even installed any modified flies yet. I wanted to get a baseline to see how much faster a work unit will run once I install them
If you post a more detailed discription of your hardware and how you have your BIOS set I may be able to help out.

Thank you both for the quick replies!

My cpu fan on the E8400 is only a couple months old, has no dust and is the one that came with the CPU.
I just ordered a Cooler Master that had a good review on toms hardware (hyper tx 2), hopefully it will cool it better. I will let you know, i will try to install it tomorrow.

On my E8400 I don't have viruses, I have a good antivirus (antiviruskit from G data) always up to date and I scan my computer every week for virus. I also have spy sweeper. Other than that i have steam running, my logitech SetPoint, Logmein and boinc running all the time in the taskbar. I don't think they are taking much of the cpu, right now setiathome is using 99 to 100% of my two core. But yes it's true that the E4400 has less programs runnings in the task bar. The E4400 is my computer at my work so I use it more in a day than my computer at home (E8400). (8-9 hours compare to 4-6 hours)

In my bios the only thing I changed is the setting of my memory. I have a P5E from Asus and Corsair memory that are 4-4-4-12. The bios was putting higher numbers so I changed it manually. I also have the latest version of the bios.

Hey John, what do you mean by "If you use requested credit + granted credit for each computer" ? The two computers are both under the same seti account...

Appelt, let me know if you need more information on my hardware.

I now installed a different fan but still my cpu is always running at 98-99 degrees celsius. I see my E8400 running at 2GHz most of the time and sometimes it will jump to 3 GHz for a couple of second and go back to 2 GHz :(

Where do you look for temperature readings?
In BIOS, in util from Asus (SmartDoctor?), in Everest, ...?
Or you have hardware solution?

What is the temperature if you stop BOINC/SETI and CPU usage is 1-5%?

What is the temperature feeling if you touch the heatsink?
And if you touch the bottom of the mainboard under the CPU?
(If it is really 99 deg CELSIUS be careful not to burn your fingers!)

Check your swap page file!
Increase the minimum amount of paging file to twice of your memory.
Also, go to registry editor and find this "EnablePrefetcher", and change value to "0". That will makes your computer running faster.

The temperature in the bios is around 90 degrees
In the Asus AI Suite 1.01.19 is at 99 degrees.
In Everest Ultimate Edition 4.20.1170 it's saying 99 degrees (210 F) and 103 for the first core and 104! for the second core.
I can not touch the back of my motherboard without unscrewing and unplug everything. When i touch the heatsink it's hot but i can leave my fingers on it without getting burned since there is not a lot of contact... i can touch only the edge of the metal plates. The rest is protected by a plastic cover.

For the swap file, the initial one is 2046 Mo and the maximum size is 4092.
I have 2 gig of ram.

I stoped the Boinc and now the cpu is at 63-64 degrees... CPU is used between 0 and 5% without BOINC running.

Your CPU is far to hot even without Boinc running. Do not run Boinc again until you find out why. Check the mounting of the cpu heatsink and fan assy. Something is not right. If you have a friend who has experience with installing heatsink and fan assy's then have him double check your work. Get a second opinion from someone.

Sounds like the wrong use of a simple thing as Arctic Silver. Or no use of it at all.

I had this problem on my Asus AMD K7 mainboard, I bought the board because it had a C.O.P. system in it, meaning when the heat is over 78C it will shutdown to protect the core.

I did a series of upgrades on my mainboard, BIOS flashes, very easy to do, if you know what your doing, Asus uses a tool to download your BIOS and installs it live on the system, system will have to boot again. Upgraded the system from x.1.08 to x.1.15, the temp. went down to 48C and never gone to 60C again.
Another thing to take into account, is livingspace of the PC, don't ever leave your sytem in to a to small box or place your system with the output or intake fan to a wall. Even the pc needs too breath now and than..:)

Try to get the airflow right into your system, minitower have minimal requirements for a airflow. Big and High tower systems has to have extra fans in them, the heat has to go out of the system. Placing the system right beside a heater or on the ground is not the best thing to do. If placed on the ground, you will attract dust, dust is your worst enemy in to the battle to keep your system cool! Dust goes in to your heatsink, fans and blocks in- and external ports. My system is cleaned every 4 months, I remove dust on the fans and between the heatsink.

The best tip is already given to you, buy a very good heatsink with a fan with a variable RPM between the 2000 RPM and 5000 RPM. is will cost approx. €79 or $120, depending on where you live. The most fans are very quit now.

John mentioned a virus, could be a problem too, never heard that the virus cause a heat problem before, but it can explain the workload/heat on your pc.

Before you go cruching again for BOINC, solve your heat problem first! Your CPU will get 'a burnout' if continued! It will cost you a lot of money when this happens.

"... never heard that the virus cause a heat problem before, but it can explain the workload/heat on your pc ..."

No, it's not a virus - 90 deg C in BIOS! And 64 at 0-5% load!
I can say that in BIOS temp. is higher because in Win the SpeedStep is working -
Look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep

- at low CPU usage it lowers the Voltage and Frequency of the CPU to cool it.
What are the Voltage and Frequency of the CPU at low CPU usage?

"buy a very good heatsink" - he just did

"dust is your worst enemy" - yes but the system is new

"Upgraded the system from x.1.08 to x.1.15, the temp. went down to 48C and never gone to 60C again" -
It can be the case if the CPU is not recognized right and Voltage is set too high.

Can you ([AF>HFR] kleudde) give the values of Voltages & Frequency in BIOS/Asus/Everest?
(at high and low load of the CPU)
Give the RPM of the fan also.

If you can - make photos of heatsink from different angles and show them here.

Does your new heatsink have thermal pad or did you applied thermal paste underneath?
(it has to be applied on thin - not thick - layer)

"I can not touch the back of my motherboard without unscrewing and unplug everything" -
try to touch the metal just behind (under) the CPU - how warm is it?

Hi

Just wondering what modified files you would use and how do they speed up the completion of work units?

For the record Intel E2180 2GHz dual core both measuring between 39 and 43 when
@100% load - depending on app used to measure temperature.

If you go here you can download 2.4V Windows x32 SSSE3 Intel or 2.4V Windows x32 SSSE3 Intel+GFX (if you want the screensaver). These are optimised to use the SSE capabilities of your processor and provide a significant boost in performance.

Thank you for that. Now installed and I will monitor to gauge what sort of increase I get.

Gosh I seem to have this crunching mania quite bad, even started to salivate over quad cores and dual processor motherboards :o) .

Take great care, my friend ;)

From our respective join-up dates, it looks like I came on-board shortly after you did back in '99. In my case, I downloaded the "screensaver" to my SX25 after seeing SAH featured on "Tomorrows World" on the BBC. After a while the novelty wore off (it was 28.8 dial-up after all) and I lapsed.

Then last year, I got tired of the noise produced by my Athlon-powered homebrew machine and built a Core2Duo machine, mainly for quiet operation. But I then found how overclockable the E6400 is and it seemed a shame to waste all that potential. And I then wanted something to test the long-term stability of my overclock but that would do something more productive than Prime95 - that's when I found that SAH had evolved into Boinc.

That was when I found what an interesting bunch of people populated these Boards and started to participate, and found other projects on Boinc that interested me. Then I found that the motherboard I had used for my E6400 would happily take a Q6600 - then that the Q6600 could go even faster with a better heatsink....

Now I'm looking forward to my first million Boinc (currently scheduled for Mayday).

It's a very slippery slope you are heading towards (-but an enjoyable hobby ;)
And, as with everything, what you get out of it depends on what you put in.

Happy crunching,

F.

Sorry, I was out for a week.

You can get the credit granted for individual computers that are in the same account. You can also go through the list of WUs assigned to the computer and add the pending WUs.
